I got twelve hours' sleep, the weather was cold, clean, windswept and marvellous, and I spent hours and hours by the marina lake, talking about religion, politics and fandom with hathy_col, as today was her last day down here, and really, those are all the ingredients required for a simple good day. Apart from the bit where my best friend is moving back to Scotland tomorrow, but shush. I am going to go to St Andrews to see her in Wyrd Sisters and now I've said I will in LJ, I have no excuse not to get my tickets.

But now I cannot sleep, and it's three am and I want something with my low-fat (urgh) hot chocolate. So, in the interests of science, a poll! Which you must all answer, and then tomorrow I shall go and load up on provisions for my week's insomnia.

I've been a vegetarian for...almost four years now, and have always wanted to go vegan. And I finally did last month!

It's not for any concrete reason...I just was introduced to the culture of it and it felt more right than just about anything else ever has.

You could make them? I haven't tried yet myself, but vegan margarine and soy milk are completely indistinguishable from dairy and...I'm sure there must be an egg-substitute out there too.

You'd be amazed at the spread of egg-substitutes! There's things marketed as substitutes, some people use tofu, soy yogurt, apple sauce, bananas...I made a carrot cake over the summer using melted soy-based ice cream, actually.

I love chocolate digestives (The McVitties kind) but we can't get those here. It's been years since I've eaten them. We ca get the regular digestives which is better than, I suppose.
Are custard creams the same as regular custard? Can't get custard here either but my great aunt sends me a package every few months.
I've heard of jammie dodgers but I have no idea what they are.
Hobnobs! I've had those! And they don't have them here either.

Custard creams are small, two-layer biscuits with a sort of custard-flavoured cream in between. They're nice. Jammie dodgers are similar, only they're circular with a tiny bit of jam in the middle. All very nice.

It is, yeah. (They claim 'imports' as an excuse to hike prices by ridiculous amounts; the only thing odder than the prices is the people who buy said imports in bulk, leaving me with a vague sort of fascination with their wallets. ;) )

Many of these things are different from what we have in America, so I went pretty much at random:

Custard Creams, because I like every incarnation of custard that I've tried so far, and rich tea, because I... like tea? I also like rich things, so double yeah, and bourbons, because I like bourbon. Actually I've never had bourbon and hate the taste of alcohol generally, but that was the thought process.

Custard creams do not, to me, taste like custard. That may just be me, as I do like them and I don't like custard. It is a mystery. Also, rich tea biscuits are sadly mislabelled. They are dry, flat, barely sweetened things designed for dunking in tea. And er, I have no idea what the connection is between bourbon biscuits - oblong, flat, filled with chocolate cream - and actual bourbon. Um, I am not helpful with the explanation today, clearly. *g*
