A very scientific and important question, omg.

I got twelve hours' sleep, the weather was cold, clean, windswept and marvellous, and I spent hours and hours by the marina lake, talking about religion, politics and fandom with [livejournal.com profile] hathy_col, as today was her last day down here, and really, those are all the ingredients required for a simple good day. Apart from the bit where my best friend is moving back to Scotland tomorrow, but shush. I am going to go to St Andrews to see her in Wyrd Sisters and now I've said I will in LJ, I have no excuse not to get my tickets.

But now I cannot sleep, and it's three am and I want something with my low-fat (urgh) hot chocolate. So, in the interests of science, a poll! Which you must all answer, and then tomorrow I shall go and load up on provisions for my week's insomnia.

[Poll #822143]

As the resident vegan, I felt complelled to select the last option.

And also I have no idea what the hell any of that is.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
They are all weird and wonderful types of biscuit. (And I believe rich tea are probably vegan.) I didn't know you were vegan! How so?

[identity profile] rosariotijeras.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've been a vegetarian for...almost four years now, and have always wanted to go vegan. And I finally did last month!

It's not for any concrete reason...I just was introduced to the culture of it and it felt more right than just about anything else ever has.

You could make them? I haven't tried yet myself, but vegan margarine and soy milk are completely indistinguishable from dairy and...I'm sure there must be an egg-substitute out there too.

[identity profile] rosariotijeras.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd be amazed at the spread of egg-substitutes! There's things marketed as substitutes, some people use tofu, soy yogurt, apple sauce, bananas...I made a carrot cake over the summer using melted soy-based ice cream, actually.

None of the above, for I am American and must pay exorbitant prices if I want any of those. ;)

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
That is WOEFUL. I didn't even think of that. My sincerest and deepest condolences. :)

It is very woeful. At least now I can GET them, though, which is good because a lifetime of cons (with British attendees bringing goodies) has spoiled me.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Say the word and I will send you a package.

[identity profile] gamesiplay.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't know what any of that is. (And I kind of do live on the equivalent of celery these days, so.)

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Each one is a type of biscuit. I am being very profound in my insomnia, yes. Also, I thought you lived off mashed potato and lemon... er, lemon wafer-type things. :P

[identity profile] gamesiplay.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Lemon bars, rock hard. Mashed potatoes and lemon bars are delicacies; they have to be made. Most days it's raw carrots and yogurt for me.

I love chocolate digestives (The McVitties kind) but we can't get those here. It's been years since I've eaten them. We ca get the regular digestives which is better than, I suppose.
Are custard creams the same as regular custard? Can't get custard here either but my great aunt sends me a package every few months.
I've heard of jammie dodgers but I have no idea what they are.
Hobnobs! I've had those! And they don't have them here either.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-17 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Custard creams are small, two-layer biscuits with a sort of custard-flavoured cream in between. They're nice. Jammie dodgers are similar, only they're circular with a tiny bit of jam in the middle. All very nice.

[identity profile] ressie-noldo.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I was compelled to vote for 'all of the above', because as Deep and Profound as my love for chocolate digestives/hobnobs/jammie dodgers (!) is, I'm not about to buy them at a hundred and fifty rupees per packet.

Alas.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-17 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Rs. 150? Seriously? *flaps hands about* That's obscene.

(Er, just for reference: you lived in Britain before, right?)

[identity profile] ressie-noldo.livejournal.com 2006-09-19 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, yeah. (They claim 'imports' as an excuse to hike prices by ridiculous amounts; the only thing odder than the prices is the people who buy said imports in bulk, leaving me with a vague sort of fascination with their wallets. ;) )

And yes, I did. (Sort of aeons ago, though, to be honest.)

[identity profile] ladyfalcon.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Many of these things are different from what we have in America, so I went pretty much at random:

Custard Creams, because I like every incarnation of custard that I've tried so far, and rich tea, because I... like tea? I also like rich things, so double yeah, and bourbons, because I like bourbon. Actually I've never had bourbon and hate the taste of alcohol generally, but that was the thought process.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Custard creams do not, to me, taste like custard. That may just be me, as I do like them and I don't like custard. It is a mystery. Also, rich tea biscuits are sadly mislabelled. They are dry, flat, barely sweetened things designed for dunking in tea. And er, I have no idea what the connection is between bourbon biscuits - oblong, flat, filled with chocolate cream - and actual bourbon. Um, I am not helpful with the explanation today, clearly. *g*

[identity profile] forthwritten.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Am packing for university to leave in the next hour. Do I have my double pack of milk chocolate hobnobs? Yes, of course. Do I have all my clothes and know where my toaster is? Er...
Priorities dammit!

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed! I am yet to pack, but I know what food I'm taking and I know where my towel is, by god.

[identity profile] forthwritten.livejournal.com 2006-09-17 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Massive spider fell out of my housemate's towel onto her FACE the other day after her shower. Who knows the evil that towels contain?

Am in Liverpool by the way; the offer to meet up with a random stranger stands, but I won't be offended if you decline.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. Can I come to the House of Copious Food and be fed Penguins? *hopeful smile*

[identity profile] jacinthsong.livejournal.com 2006-09-16 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Please do! Whether or not we have any confectionary will depend on how much money we have, but I miss you. Yes.

[identity profile] loneraven.livejournal.com 2006-09-17 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I will bring you Penguins as a housewarming present. I am itching to be back in Oxford again, srsly.

Aw :) When are you getting back?
