Writing issues
Apr. 8th, 2004 02:02 pmI'm having writing issues.
Firstly, my fic for
remixredux. The deadline is in less than a week, and I hadn't written a word. So I finally sat down and had a go. The problem is, the writer I've been assigned to remix is really not me at all. I really wish it hadn't been Harry Potter fandom I'd been assigned to, because it's such a large fandom with so many pairings and eras. My remix author writes almost exclusively Harry/Draco, which is bad to begin with - I have written absolutely nothing about anyone of Harry's generation - and she likes NC-17. I have never attempted to write NC-17 fic. Not because of prudery - I'll read it happily enough - but because I physically can't. My characters turn into cardboard cutouts and my writing deflates and goes completely flat. The only fic that I could see myself remixing is fluffy PWP, and I couldn't think of a particularly original angle on it, so I'm just writing it as I'd have written it. The result is getting extremely sardonic in tone, which I'm afraid might be taken as an insult, and I haven't even got to the porny bits, which will undoubtedly cause me much angst as I can't write the damn stuff. I don't even like the pairing!
In short, anyone got any advice? On writing porn, on writing Harry/Draco, on writing in general?
In other news, I've wanted to write Stargate fic for some time now. My Stargate fic is invariably gen or het, for some reason. Have never written Stargate slash. That's besides the point. I sort of kind of have something in mind. I wanted to write something fairly long, but light-hearted and funny. A plot duly presented itself.
Now... I know it's a cliché. Everyone writes a story in which SG-1 are transformed into children. It has even happened (admittedly on a very limited scale) in canon (Fragile Balance). But the thing is, I've never seen it done well in a fic. There is one out there I've just been reading, and while it had potential, it's completely let down by beta-type issues. Bad grammar, inconsistent capitalisation, cliché characterisation, that kind of thing. I know
minkboylove did it as well, but her version is also slightly different.
So I could do it. It would be gen, sans angst, probably a complete cliché (I'm using that word a lot), but it would be fun to write. I'm torn on the idea.
Lunchtime.
