raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (doctor who - river song)

Forward momentum, chaps! Do not even ask about the issues I had getting into the city this morning. Do not even ask. Luckily I have a fairy godmother in the shape of Shim. But I am in New York on [personal profile] macadamanaity's couch and I am blissed out on rum and wine and some other things.

Also Doctor Who ohmygod Doctor Who. I am strangely, faintly bitter that I had to wait a whole eight hours after it was shown in the UK to see it, and also we hate BBC America, we do, how many commercial breaks, come on.

But. Oh, oh, oh. Doctor Who. Here are the things I really liked:

-The beginning! The way we don't actually know when this is set - whether this is a month, a year, or several years after the end of "The Big Bang", and we don't even know if the Doctor, Amy and Rory went on tonnes of adventures after that and if they did what they all were. But the Doctor waves at them through history, and all is well.

-And the picnic, and the spaceman (who reminds of the Solway Firth Spaceman every time I see it), and I was like, "Is that..." and it was regeneration fairy dust, and that was... a death. Rory saying, "Let's do it properly" - that was a beautiful touch, and I loved the visual of the boat on the water.

-This Doctor has friends now. Three whole people he can call. Oh, Eleven, I love you so much.

-Also, Canton is a fabulous character and all that being quietly sardonic is fab.

-The aliens are so scary. They are very, very scary. The suits make them even scarier. It's like the Gentlemen in "Hush". Scary. And the idea of aliens whom you forget when you're not looking at them is amazing, I love it. Star Trek did it, but benevolently, because it's Star Trek and a show for adults that doesn't want to scare your pants off and give you nightmares for the rest of your life (which will be long, because you're five).

-The little girl. Is she American? Is she Scottish? She's very creepy. I have to admit to wondering, since the preview: is she Amelia? I don't know she could be, but if you go to the effort of making sure the little girl you cast is Scottish...

-I'm not sure what I think about the whole River thing at the moment. Because I am an unashamed Doctor/River shipper, I wrote fic about it and everything, I want them to live happily ever after, and if they're drifting further and further apart in time.... well. Well, I don't approve. River Song! I love her. For the record and all that, I really do.

-Amy's pregnant? She's feeling "a bit sick"? But River says that once as well, in this episode. I am intrigued. I haven't been this excited about a television show in months. Yaaaay, Doctor Who!

Tomorrow! Brunch, and probably another windswept grey New York day, and I'm cheerful. It feels good to be in the city; earlier in the day I got a Lindt bunny for the Siren and a cheap necklace from Forever 21 for myself, and I got a purple nail polish from somewhere on Madison and just felt the small-town itch lift. Feeling much better, and so so glad I didn't cancel this trip down. Back up north in the evening, but let's not talk about that.

Yeah, she thought it was a coworker/friend in costume, didn't she? I mean that WOULD be the reasonable thing to assume if you didn't know that Aliens existed for real. I'm sure most people seeing something like that Alien would go: AKFJSAKJD WTF! OMG, you scared me, great costume! (And then look away and forget if it IS that Alien.)
