raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (misc - me)
[personal profile] raven
I'm at home. This is a strange and wonderful concept, but emphasis on the wonderful; my mother spent the week getting more and more insistent that I come home, while I did my very best to to fob her off with half-formed excuses about needing to use the library. Of course, what she didn't know is that I bought the tickets online last week, they came on Monday, I bought my railcard and packed stuff all Friday morning, and when I was sending her frantic texts instructing her not to call, I was in a tutorial, I was actually on the 16.35 from Oxford to Crewe. She was out getting milk when I got home, and when she got back and I opened the door, well. I've never seen anyone light up quite so beautifully.

In short, I am very pleased to be home and my parents are pleased, too. It's Diwali on Tuesday and my mother's birthday tomorrow, which are all good reasons to be here, and when I explained all this to Bob at the beginning of this week, he shouted that family was much more important than Logic and that I should go home. Unexpectedly sweet of him, I thought, but it all became a moot point anyway because as of yesterday, I am no longer doing Logic! It's true; much making of pathetic faces on my part persuaded Bob to let me switch to Mill's Utilitarianism instead. I love the world, but dread the essays. Life is, as always, interesting.

Being at home has one unexpected benefit - I can download music! This is going to be one of my begging for music posts, I'm afraid; I will return the favour with interest at Christmas, and you can all take exactly you want from my minimal and painfully uncool collection, but in the meantime I have nothing new to listen to. Please, pretty please upload stuff, anything you think I'd like. The only thing I'm after specifically is a studio edit of the Indigo Girls' Land of Canaan, but I'd love any old stuff by them, anything old by the Goo Goo Dolls, anything at all, basically.

Other than this, nothing at all is going on. I went out for Chinese to Café Opium on Thursday, having survived Logic and tried out for the university quiz team and shrieked abuse at Varian fo most of the week, I was joining the mood of general celebration. Afterwards I lost Claire and Pat in favour of Po Na Na, and didn't mind wandering back to college in the moonlight. Lovely, although the image of college feels terribly far away sitting here at the kitchen table at home. I'm wearing my Balliol hoodie and feeling like it belongs to someone else; like I've said before, life in college is another time and another place.

Talking of which, worlds are colliding at the weekend - [livejournal.com profile] clareyperson's coming to visit, just in time for Guy Fawkes and the Hallowe'en bop. Balliol is having a four hundreth anniversary spectacular for Guy Fawkes - apparently, the site of the pub where the Catholics conspirated is now part of Balliol College - with fireworks and marshmallows and lots of food out on the Master's Field. I just have to survive the journey back, the week, and the advent of maths lessons!

So, yes, much craziness. I need music and I love you all.

Aw, this is such a sweet entry, both how you came home for a surprise and how your tutor let you. :)

I shall think about the music now. Yes.

Is that Laura Fraser in your icon? If she's in Casanova I'm running to the shops now.

Ooo yes, yes it is, and she is just as pretty as Tennant in Casanova. *loves*

Such prettiness all in one place! I think I'll have to check if the library has a copy, then reserve a few nights on the DVD player in the living room...

Thank you! :)

Okaay. I don't have the specifics you want, but decided to upload a stupid amount of vaguely pretty music anyway. You can tell by the amount I uploaded that I really don't want to finish my work for tonight *g* anyway, zip file one (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AGVJ7GQ9) / two (http://www.megaupload.com/es/?d=76PRN0OO) / three (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3BC4DJ0T).

(Why can't you download music at Balliol? *frown* I don't use P2P software, but megaupload and yousendit still work fine for me.)

Oh, and sorry for spamming your inbox, but I've uploaded a lot more (http://www.livejournal.com/users/jacinthsong/tag/music) at various points, mostly full albums, in case there's anything there that suits your taste.

Oh, thank you! I'm very grateful.

Because our ethernet provision really is that draconian. I could quote from it, but I won't; in short, downloading anything at all will result in your disconnection from the ethernet and and early demise.

Bob apparently has a heart! He was so nice about this whole thing, I almost feel guilty for dropping Logic.

And thanks so much for all the music! My stupid laptop won't let me at any of it! *kicks it* I'm sure the other commenters partook and the uploads weren't wasted, but I'm still pissed off with Loki.

*frown* why not? Are the files too big to download or can't it open the zips?

ah, read your other entry - never mind me. Megaupload keeps files for a minimum of a month, so they should still be there when you go home at Christmas.

Neither; in college I can't download any of it, and at home my laptop isn't staying connected long enough to download anything at all. It's a conspiracy.

Probably not; I'm only here for two days! I'll see you in early December, I think.

Strange. I've been able to download stuff other people have uploaded without any problem. Perhaps it's something on a college level.

Hooray for being at home and for Mill instead of Logic! What a nice surprise for your family.

I'd upload music but have no clue what you'd like (and don't have those specific groups you mention)!

Hee, it was lovely. I missed my family!

My musical taste is, um... uncool. :) But I am now back in college, so no more music until Christmas, sadly.

Awww. Just, aww. That was so sweet of you; I can imaginge my Mum's reaction if I turned up like that. She was pleased enough when I remembered to ring her on the opening night of the play she's in. :D

[snuggles you] Awww.

*snuggle* It was lovely, and worth the money, the hassle, everything; she was just so happy.

Oh, wow. How long does it take you to get home? I'm jealous.

Right now, the Goo Goo Dolls songs I have are: "Slide," "Black Balloon," "Broadway," "Iris," "Here Is Gone," "Girl Right Next to Me," and "Name"--most of which I believe you gave to me. :) But through the wonders of file-sharing, I can find a lot more if you give me titles. They're a pretty popular group here.

Are you familiar with Colin Hay? I've been listening to a couple of his songs recently, and he's very interesting.

From door to door, about four and a half hours. (Today it took much longer to get back, but it's a Sunday which does make such a difference.) It's about two hundred miles from home to here.

Hee, those are pretty familiar. I don't think I gave you "Broadway"; I've got all the rest somewhere. Sadly my computer won't let me download stuff anywhere, it seems. Serves me right for calling the damn thing Loki! :)

No, I've never heard of Colin Hay. Interesting how?

Ah, okay. I am not quite as jealous; it's not like you can go home on a whim, then.

Argh, I'm sorry, what a pain. Anyway, Colin Hay--when I say "interesting," that should be read as "I am so out of touch with contemporary music that I have no vocabulary with which to describe it." *grins* He's Scottish, I think, although he was originally part of an Australian rock band called Men at Work. Now he does... sort of low-key acoustic rock? Like I said, no vocabulary. He relaxes me, though.

Wow, that must have taken you, like, days to get there! (She says, having looked into it before deciding Not To).

I'm sorry you dropped logic, but not at all surprised. I'm sorry for being snarky.

It is deeply unlikely that you would want any of my music collection, but both Sylvian and Sakamoto are great study music. Once again, I find myself recommending My Life Story: if you want their albums, let me know.

I seem to have lots and lots of music. Those are the ones I'd recommend.

Oh, that reminds me, I wanted to ask you when Diwali was & also I wanted to know if you'd mind telling me a bit more about it (because I want to do something about it with the Rainbows, which happens to be on Tuesday)
You know, how it's cultural to do something other than bonfire night.

Heh. I was going to ask that as well, as I've been trying to come up with something to do with the Brownies on Wednesday, to mix with the firework night things they'll be doing. At the moment I'm thinking paper lanterns.

Thank you. I expect we'll be okay, and using paper rather than a real flame will cut down on the risk immensely, even if it does mean using a Chinese technique for an Indian festival. A lantern is a lantern, right?

Diwali is on Tuesday. It's the festival of lights, in order to hold off winter and oncoming darkness, and the traditions are all based on light - fireworks, candles, tealights, everything. After sunset, you're supposed to go round the windowsills in your house, placing lit tealights by the windows and the sides of the doors. In addition to that, there's lots of food and parties and suchlike. It's a lot of fun.

Teh Flatmates all nearly imploded when I said we should do something for Diwali. My argument was that none of us are Christian and we all celebrate Christmas and Easter and Pancake Day, but Diwali has pretty lights and is much better than wasting lots of rainforests on wrapping paper, yes. [nods]
