ravenWe are at the stage where random pieces of the Chemistry syllabus keep me going.
1. Alkyl groups increase amine base strength; benzene rings decrease it.
Weather is absolutely abysmal. Today, it has snowed, hailed, rained, been windy, sunny, stormy, lightning has flashed and thunder has crashed, and when I was coming out of school I saw great blocks of ice slide down the glass of the atrium and hit the ground with heavy flumping sounds. I've been home an hour and my hands are still chilled to the bone.
2. In nmr spetra, tetramethylsilane gives the zero peak.
However, it is getting lighter. I got home at quarter to five and it was still light, which is a distinct improvement; it's dark now but you can't have everything. I actually like the weather when I'm inside and cosy; I suppose everyone does.
3. At half-equivalence of an acid/base titration, pKa = pH.
I'm not in the mood for updating properly, as we can see, but nothing of any importance has happened today. I spent lots of time hiding from the rain in the library and bugging Miranda; the scientists are in despair over the stats exam (apparently it went very badly); we're thinking of setting up some sort of club within the library, but I don't know what exactly. I was in there when Mrs Miller stomped in looking despairing, as her memory pen wasn't being accepted by any computer in the school. Turned out she'd locked it. I was amused.
4. Alcohols are dehydrated to alkenes with protons donated from sulphuric acid and regenerated at the end.
I am extremely happy that Sky One are showing season one of Stargate, because it's so good and the early episodes are so much fun to watch, what with the complete irreverence of the show at this stage. Slight attack of nostalgia, always good. Anyway, my annual fandom nostalgia post is probably coming up, because next month I'll have been in fandom four years and will want to do something about it.
5. Acyl chlorides react with alchols by nucleophilic addition-elimination and produce esters and hydrochloric acid; this is more effective than esterification because it is not an equilibrium.

on 2005-01-19 06:43 pm (UTC)Oh, protons and electrons and stuff. I am assuming from your explaination that in forming an ion electrons leave the, the, atom? very small thingy, anyway. I probably knew this at one point but forgot it the instant I walked out of my science GCSE.
By the way, I have other things to say to you. Two sets: one, re. Wincanton, which is long and involved and I'll stick in e-mail; and two, are you likely to have time this weekend to run a quick facts-and-spelling beta over a bit of HP and potentially also BtVS fic? I've only just started, and then deadline is Monday, so I'm not expecting it to be a *long* story. 1000 words, tops.
