Exploding leeks
Mar. 4th, 2004 05:01 pmSo, we finally know what the J in Remus J. Lupin stands for.
This has totally made my day.
Also, he's half-blood. In all my fics, he's been pureblood with Muggle grandparents. Ah, close enough. One thing that really impressed me, though; the detail in which JK Rowling knows her world. She gave immediate answers to some really specfic questions, such as Ron's and Ginny's middle names.
Other than this, my day has not been good at all. Something about the last few days has led to a recurrence of some of my old summertime depression. I'm bored... of school, of people, of everything. We were supposed to have a drama festival rehearsal today and I couldn't face it. I tried to go, but couldn't make myself, and in the end I was sitting at one of the library computers, getting steadily more and more depressed, when Nichola and Sam arrived. I didn't want to talk to them. But they were giggling and talking about stupid stuff and we did eventually start playing Scrabble. At which Nichola flagrantly cheated, claiming her dyslexia entitled her. I disagreed vociferously and showed it by throwing the letter tiles at her. I'd thrown four Ls and a T before Shefali dragged her off to play draughts.
Final scores: Sam - 129, me - 87, and Nichola - 43.
Sam always glories in the fact she can invariably beat two sixth formers at Scrabble. One is dyslexic and the other is me, which takes the sheen off it a bit.
Somewhere along the way, we went into lunch, despite the fact I'd already had a packed lunch. We wandered in and wandered out again with two apples, a profiterole and a strange chocolate mousse type thing. I suppose we shouldn't really be eating in the library, as we were sitting next to a sign reading "Please do not eat the display" but no-one came in and complained.
Miss Gow's latest plan for an assembly is doing one on Hinduism. Accordingly, she has cornered every Hindu girl in the school, who have all backed off in horror. She held a meeting in the library this morning for all the people she'd persuaded. I have agreed to help simply because I do like her and it makes her so happy when people participate. Miss Gow is fundamentally a very happy person. She adores her subject, she adores being asked questions, she likes Harry Potter in Latin or otherwise, and I see her sometimes in the morning, sailing past on her bicycle ("sailing" is the only word for it; she doesn't appear to have to pedal) and she rings her bell and waves and just looks so happy. She's so cute. Pedar actually liked her very much when he met her last year. Said she was that rare thing, a true academic.
That's all by the bye. I have apparently committed myself to participation, as opposed to having simply committed myself. I felt like doing that later, though. On my way to Chemistry, Becca and I made a stop by the small Biology lab to wait for Charlene, and while we were there, she told me what had happened at the rehearsal I didn't go to. Apparently Sarah McCabe has been making an arse of herself, or something along those lines. She's had a go at the class in general, but particularly Freia, which is not a good idea. Verena found out, being Freia's big sister and therefore homicidally inclined towards Sarah. Cue angst.
I'm more glad that I didn't go, now. After Becca had told me this, I went up to Chemistry and lay on the bench in the sunshine, drowsily taking down notes. Midway through the equilibrium pressure effect - "...the vessels have to have thick walls and be leakproof..." - Steph suddenly burst out with, "I wrote it with two Es!"
"Leakproof?" Mrs Colvin repeated. "Leekproof?"
And I started to laugh. The sort of silly, uncontrolled laughter that probably had something to do with the unexplained depression, but I couldn't help picturing people going for steel containers with leeks, and then when the notes continued to "Otherwise there may be explosions" I started picturing exploding leeks, and bits of green stuff flying everywhere during the Haber process.
...yes. Moving on. On to English, which bored me, and then I went home slightly early. Sadly enough, the high point of my day will probably be Stargate - 48 Hours, which is on in about five minutes.
Before I go, though - it's the full moon in two days. Therefore, Remus needs a new icon, methinks; one that shows him in his other form. Anyone happen to have any relevant bases flying around?
