Rumours!

In the morning, I went into school to find everyone busy revising Physics. Becca was in a state of controlled panic, so I thought it best not to disturb her and went to English. She and Emma and lots of people went and got registered and had their module. It was only a hour, and my English was longer (even though we got out early) so when I got back to the common room, everyone who did Physics was already there. Becca was standing by the window, talking to Steph Bullough. I naturally assumed they were talking about Physics, so I went over to ask them how it went.

However, that never quite happened.

"Did you hear the rumour going round about you?" Becca called out. "Apparently you're going out with Patrick Barry!"

I settled for "Yes, I am," followed by, "How did you know?"

I mean, I hadn't told anyone. For a given value of anyone, naturally; I hadn't told anyone apart from you lot.

Becca's face was a sight to behold. "Steph told me!"

Steph, once questioned, hotly denied this. "I was just asking if it was true! Grace told me!"

I could understand why she was asking Becca for confirmation, but really couldn't believe the speed of the rumour mill. "And how the hell did Grace know?"

Steph didn't know the answer to that, and promised to find out for me. Becca was initially surprised at the whole affair, and then sweet about it. She and Emma took delight in embarrassing me at every possible opportunity, but thankfully there was always a nearby module book to thwap them with.

Seriously, I'm grateful that the rumour-mongering will have died down by the time I see Patrick again. I don't know why people get so excited about this kind of thing. That's why I didn't tell anyone! And yet, everyone knows. I later found out that Grace had seen me and Patrick on Saturday, and leapt to the appropriate conclusion.

In other news, I got the message for the quiz team this afternoon. I'm the captain this year in the absence of [livejournal.com profile] lilka, and it's in February and should be fun. Maybe we won't lose so badly this year. I may even know things about geography. The geographers' two modules are tomorrow and they're all panicking and telling me about geography. Becky Branton informed me that "half a million people go to to Sao Paolo to live every hour." Picturing this, I started to laugh and so did everyone else, picturing the twelve million people arriving in the city every day. The actual statistic is per year, of course.

That's everything. I'm hungry, and my mother's home, and generally it's all cool.
