Play-day

I can't say a lot really happened today. The geographers went off to their (two) modules, and I sloped off to Chemistry. It's organic. I hate, hate organic chemistry. Why is everyone obsessed with carbon? And today we were doing organic compound nomenclature, of all things. I was rather proud of managing to name a compound with its correct scientific name: 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octamethylhexane. I like Chemistry because of its underlying logic, and this is no exception. I just don't like it when it begins to border on biochemistry. Thankfully, the other Chemistry module is inorganic. The biology module is "Genes and Genetic Engineering", which did not fit on the divider, but you can't have everything in life.

English followed, which was all right; I have to print and submit my coursework tomorrow, but it still hasn't got a title! I wrote a short story with "multiculturalism" as its theme, and I might post it on LJ later and ask you all for title suggestions. [livejournal.com profile] tygermoonfoxx - if you read it and still want it for Converging Paths, it's all yours.

As I have said before, the Drama Festival rehearsals were today. Becca forgot the script, so we quickly wrote out something for them all to say, and auditioned. I think it must have been rather intimidating - they had to come in to the room one by one and face seven sixth formers. One girl, Steph, tried three times to audition but ran out in shyness every time. There is one girl, name of Lauren, who has been cast as Daisy. I probably shouldn't have written that here, but the odds of the class seeing it are miniscule enough for me to take the chance. But a lead character does not a production make, and it's amazing how much in the way of logistics there are to be arranged for only an hour's auditioning on Thursday. Firstly, me, Becca, Meg and Emma have to go and see Mrs Jordan and say pretty please can we miss maths-for-science, and the script has to be acquired, and in the morning we have to go into Crosby and get lunch for ourselves while also putting an order for twenty-five packed lunches for the class themselves. When we actually are allowed to hold after-school rehearsals (after half term, as it's still too dark in the evenings) we have to make sure the little darlings get home safely, too. The responsibility of it all... eheu, and all that.

And that's all of it. Mr Evans has been going round everyone asking, "Who was just described as 'a blind man among deaf people'?" I was the only one who got it - the answer is George Bush. Other than that, Politics was rather boring. I was in a hurry to get away in any case - I wanted to sort out all kinds of things and go and see Mrs Peppin, which I did. She has agreed to letting me put all the time I spend in the library on my community service record form, which will push up my total quite considerably.

And lastly, the Biology play-day. The coursework practical has been put back until Friday, which left today for just playing with apparatus and reagents. I have changed my mind and am now investigating the effect of substrate concentration on the action of peroxidase. It's so stupid - my GCSE coursework was also about limiting factors on the action of an enzyme, in that case lipase - because everyone knows exactly what will happen and even why. I have set up some apparatus - making the peroxide break down into water and oxygen seems the best way, and collecting the gas to ascertain rate of reaction also seemed logical. It was easier said than done, as I could not find a working gas syringe and finally got so annoyed that I accidentally threw a boiling tube over my shoulder. I didn't drop the tube, but its contents - hydrogen peroxide, buffer solution, potato slices, peroxidase - went flying across the room. It broke the depressed mood in the classroom, at least, as everyone dissolved into laughter at one person's stupidity. I aim to please.

I am in a good mood, actually. Life is not too bad at present, on all fronts. I do hope it stays that way.
