First I knew about it, my dad bounced in and said without preamble, "Iona, what are your hobbies?" Without waiting for a reply, he went on, "Reading, writing, science fiction?"
"And surfing the net," I added. "Why?"
"This man," - and he waved a CV at me - "claims his main hobby is infertility."
That was the beginning. The next one in the list claimed her main hobby was "solving people's social problems."
And the next one, who declared himself to be proficient in "software applications like MS windows, excel. Also internet." [sic]
The one after that was proud to say she had been immunised against Hepatitis B, but was surprisingly cagey about any actual professional qualifications.
Then we come to the case of one Sarina Azmud Ra'ouf, who fails to state anywhere whether he/she is male or female or something else entirely.
I came across one whose first name was Osama, and binned it on superstitious grounds, and ditto for one whose main hobby was Jack the Ripper literature. I wanted to keep one who was a Trekkie, and my dad wanted to keep one who was into avant-garde French cinema, and so we now have a shortlist of four out of a hundred and thirteen.
Oh, should have mentioned before - we knew beforehand the job was going to one Dr. David Mortimer, who works in the hospital at the moment and is one of my dad's students. All I'm saying is, I hope he appreciates what we've done for him...
