Doctor Who - A Good Man Goes To War
Jun. 5th, 2011 06:11 pmOH MY GOD DOCTOR WHO.
I have NOTHING OF SIGNIFICANCE to say about this episode. Nothing. You have already all talked about the AMAZING Silurian Victorian-lady-detective and her adorable human girlfriend! And about AMY and RORY and HOW MUCH I LOVE THEM and oh the army of adorable sidekicks and Strax the mighty nurse who is GENUINELY MIGHTY and oh by the way I love that. I love how Rory and Strax are heroes. Everybody is a big goddamn hero on Doctor Who. You can be a nurse and be a hero. You can be a pirate and be a hero. RIVER SONG IS A BIG GODDAMN HERO.
River. Oh, River. I am not surprised, but that works for me exactly how I want it to work for me, that is right, that is proper. River Song is a human being who's a little bit Time Lord, she's Amy and Rory's daughter, and wouldn't Amy and Rory's daughter be exactly like that? Yes. I love her so, so, so much, and I still completely love her and the Doctor together. Oh, River, oh I love every character in this series so much. I love the relationships between them, too - this series, and a little bit the last one, has been careful to set up a relationship between River and Rory, and I do love that they took the time to do that, this is in no way out of the blue. And also I love SO MANY WOMEN! Even if they are not River that is not their fault! Crime-fighting Silurian women! Creepy antagonist women! Amy! (And, er, I am all on board with the idea of forced childbearing being violence against women. Good thing the show presents it just as such, then.) Lorna! Lovely ladies! I love them all.
I love this vignette storytelling style, too, and I loved the creepy headless monks, and just, so much love for this! And basically I do not wish to be profound. I wish to SQUEE AT PEOPLE. And poss draw hearts around River Song. Many hearts. Lots of sparkly hearts. Hearts that are fucking awesome and save the universe. River! <3!

on 2011-06-05 08:04 pm (UTC)And yes. SO MANY wonderful women. I loved the Victorian Silurian and her maid a lot. And I also really liked the eyepatch woman.
And Rory the Centurion was just so very excellent too. I loved everything he did.
In short, lots more sparkly hearts here!

on 2011-06-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(AMY IS THE DOCTOR'S MOTHER IN LAW!!!)
(are there people suggesting that show was in some way endorsing enforced childbirth? really??)

Not exactly.... there are people saying, don't want to watch a show with yet more violence against women qua women, which I suppose is fair enough. But, yeah, at the end of last week's I was thinking, yes, the writing here knows this is a violation: we're meant to think that. But.... yeah. After the Amy-River-lady-detectives-hero-cleric extravaganza, I am not on board with "Doctor Who = misogynist".
