Haven't seen Doctor Who; have seen Sherlock Holmes. Please do not spoil me for the former; I thought the latter was silly and anachronistic and made of pure win.

And here are my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide recs. by fandom, mostly:

Discworld

A Day In The
A day in the life of Death. It's smart, with quiet, perfect details.

Fall Forever
Angua and Carrot are engaged. Naturally, the guest list for the wedding is in the thousands. I really enjoyed this.

The Whole Damn Rigmarole
Vimes escapes from a society party, and it's Young Sam's first Hogswatch. Delightful.

Slings & Arrows

Whirligig
Geoffrey/Kate, which makes no sense, but the author makes it make sense - it's a slow, interesting little story, and entirely believable.

Not Cleopatra-esque
Ellen, without Geoffrey. Her voice in this is spot-on, silly, self-obsessed, poignant, a little heartbreaking. (Note the warnings on this story.)

the Babysitters' Club

Marshmallows and Cream
Abby/Claudia. This is how you ought to do fluff.

Abby Stevenson's Theory of Winntertivity
Abby/Stacey, this time. Stacey gets season 1 of Lost on DVD, Abby gets punched. This is very funny and very fabulous.

Anastasia Krupnik

Anastasia's Future Plans
Anastasia! Growing up beautifully. Such a lovely story.

Flagrant
My story! This is so ridiculously great - snapshots as Anastasia grows up, and there's Henry, too.

And the single stories from fandoms diverse:

The Rules of Barrayaran Sex (Vorkosigan saga)
Cordelia and Aral over the years. This is sweet and funny and an absolute joy.

Gemology (Temeraire)
Emily Roland wondering why Lady Allendale gave her garnets. Short, rather minimalist, really lovely - packs a lot about the characters into a small space.

nor no man ever loved (Four Weddings And a Funeral)
Matthew, some distance in the future. This is very very lovely.

Turning Points (Ballet Shoes)
Pauline, Petrova and Posy a few years down the line. Has the gentle style of the canon, and I love the futures created for the sisters here.

The Deceivers (Iain M. Banks' Culture novels)
Special Circumstances aren't everyone's cup of tea. I was really impressed - I would have thought that Culture fanfiction wasn't possible, but the author really gets it right, the GSVs and the minor details, and Skaffen-Amitskaw's voice hits just the right whiny, bitchy note.

The Girls' Guide To Earning Your Wings (Dar Williams, Alleluia)
Yeah, the entire canon is that one song. This story is just gorgeous; I really like this model of the afterlife.

An Unexpected Admirer (Lord John Grey)
I love Lord John, and he's written wonderfully here.

Mistaken For Strangers (Connie Willis' time-travel universe)
This is FABULOUS, and probably my favourite so far. Verity goes back in time to solve a mystery, and there are hen nights and segues into Victorian underwear and Dunworthy and Ned making lovely cameos, and Verity is her lovely, competent self. I love it.

Arca Salvii (Cambridge Latin Course) - in English, in Latin.
Caecillus non est in horto any more.

That's all. I return to my exciting day of doing nothing at all.

The author locked that fic. It's a very rare exception though... almost all of the AO3 fics are public.

I've already come up against this particular wall! And I saw the openID login option, and was briefly hopeful, but then it turns out that only AO3 members can use openID. In which case, what the hell is the point?! Gah.

IT REALLY IS THAT GAY. THEY BEHAVE LIKE AN OLD MARRIED COUPLE. WITH JEALOUSY. WITH DEPRAVITY. WITH DOILIES.

SO GAY, in fact, that the NYTimes review describes Irene Adler as "the beard."

I barely read fic any more, but generally, when you rec it, I do, and am glad of it. *g* The first two Discworld fics are wonderful - I haven't read the third yet - and the Connie Willis one; rec me books/short stories by her? I know you mentioned her a while ago, but I forgot to write anything down.

I should take my sister to see Sherlock Holmes. I am glad it is fun.

Ah, lovely, lovely Connie Willis. Basically, I would recommend anything by her, she's marvellous. But novel-wise, in particular To Say Nothing of the Dog and Doomsday Book, and short-story wise, the collection Firewatch is in (is called "Fire Watch", confusingly), and a Christmas-themed collection called Miracle.
