I'm [livejournal.com profile] loneraven on Dreamwidth, predictably. If you're over there too and would like me to know that, please do say!

(Note: I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do with my account. I'm definitely not leaving LJ unless it's absolutely necessary. I may crosspost to both, I may crosspost only my public entries, or only my fic... we shall see. I'm in the sandbox to play.)

Yay!

I have an OpenID on Dreamwidth, but not yet an account. (I followed my flistie's friend [livejournal.com profile] damned_colonial's instructions on how to log in with OpenID.)

We are already friends over there, but in case anyone else would like to know, I'll mention that I am "naraht." :)

I'd hate to see you leave LJ!

Oh dear. What has happened recently that makes people feel it might be necessary to leave LJ? I am slow to find these things out...

On that note, I seem to remember hearing of some way you can back up your whole LJ in case you need to leave ... is that possible, as far as you know?

Nothing has happened! No, it's just the DW people have been developing Dreamwidth for some time as a fan-friendly, usable alternative to LJ, with features LJ doesn't have. They've just gone into open beta, so a lot of people are checking it out. I doubt there will be a mass exodus any time soon.

There are a number of ways to back up your whole LJ! LJ Backup (http://ljbackup.yamnet.co.uk/) is a start.

Do you? I think people are leaving or planning their move just about as fast as I could have expected. Faster, even.

Mmm, yes. Crossposting, I can see happening, but people actually leaving? I'm not so sure on that point.

Agreed. There is a certain amount of inertia in the LJ community. There wasn't a great exodus to IJ, or GJ, or DJ, or even Inksome: some of that undoubtedly was due to their creators being not adequately together enough to generate a social network worthy of the old LJers, but some of it probably was the inability of these networks to build up enough energy to overcome the inertia. DW has quite a bit of that energy, but unless LJ manages to get even worse than it is, I doubt there will be quite enough push to get people to leave it.

DW has got a lot of momentum and a lot of BNFs behind it, which helps. The other factor is not so much the badness of LJ as the goodness of DW... I'm seeing a lot of interest in the new features that DW has.

(God, I really sound like a cheerleader, don't I? I don't know how this happened. I had no interest at all in the LJ clones.)

Maybe not leaving. I'm going to keep crossposting as long as I have a significant number of friends who are staying here, but I expect to consider DW my primary journal.

I think there have been a number of cumulative discontents in the recent past with LJ, but I think the main draw of DW is that the codebase will be done right and that it will be not just user-friendly but user-answerable as much as possible. I imagine a lot of people will be crossposting between LJ and DW: it's a feature that DW encourages, apparently.

An easy way to back up your LJ, if you end up getting a DW account, is to import it there. Can be done with one click and a few tickyboxes, and it arrives with comments and tags and icons intact.

I don't have an account over there yet, but will probably end up being... somebody there at some point. I'm sort of paralyzed by the decision. Which username do I want to keep? Or do I want a new username? Do I want to completely migrate? WHY IS THERE NO ICE CREAM IN MY HOUSE? These are the existential questions that plague me.

This. Except that I think I still have some ice cream.

Plus, of course, the ever-bothersome issue of what sort of content I'd want to post. I've always been fannish in my lj, but as fanfic writing has dried up I've moved towards meta and jokes and book reviews; and I just started an unconnected blog for the things I keep wanting to say but think don't suit lj. So what would I write on DW?

Ever since I first heard about Dreamwidth (like a YEAR ago at least), I've been tempted to just start fresh over there-- I mean, import my journal(s?) so I don't lose years of content, but quit using my LJs and somehow integrate my fannish and personal lives into one journal over there. But the logistics are really stressful to even contemplate. I think ice cream would help.

This DW thing confuses me - so it's LJ but somehow better? I've had a look but I can't really figure out what the USPs are... help?
