You know what tempts me, above all other things, to just give in and go for being a corporate lawyer? It's not the money, although I must say, I do fantasise these days of that arcane concept of receiving wages for services rendered. No, the money is not the thing. It is the ease of it. The way I could just sit down for a day and do a stack of applications and answer truthfully and in heartfelt fashion about what a wonderful corporate lawyer I would make, and I could send them off and if I got a job I'd get it and if I didn't I wouldn't and it would be, at least, simple. Instead, I realise more and more that there are no public lawyers, there are no criminal lawyers, those that there are don't want to employ a twenty-two-year-old non-law graduate and those that might have been persuaded into it have been credit crunched.

This rant brought to you by the nagging fear I will never get a training contract ever, which was brought to me by the realisation that I have been applying for these things for two years now, which has been a contributory factor to general crankiness. Other reasons: I have lurgy and rampant claustrophobia, also my cousin had a baby two days ago, a baby with lots of hair and very large dark eyes and the sweetest little face, and because I am a sodding NRI halfway through a sodding law degree, I will probably not meet him until he graduates from college. They haven't named him yet, and probably they will have his janampatri done and name him something incredibly old-fashioned and formal, but I imagine that for several years yet he will answer to "Baaaaaaby!"

(Someone asked me recently if Indian babies look like Winston Churchill. I can confirm that no, no they don't.)

Grrr. I want a job and some free time and maybe some plane tickets. Universe, get on that, please.

Congrats on being a first-cousin-once-removed! I am sorry about the lurgy, also. And the lack of time.

...

The mind, it boggles.

*laughs* I pondered whether they looked like Gandhi. They don't really. I think I reached the conclusion that Indian babies do not tend to resemble political leaders...

I think this is a good thing. I found it scary enough when my second-cousin looked like a combination of her parents (like one of those eye-puzzles where you can see either the old woman or the young woman, and not both) and throwing political leaders in the mix would be unnecessarily terrifying.

Then again, tiny babies are not terrifying, they are stupidly adorable. Two babies smiled at me today and I had to stop myself from stealing them. Teeny faces, GIANT gorgeous eyes. Bweeeee. *flails*

And then one of them started making noise, and I remembered why I don't want one. But in terms of being ridiculously cute, yes.

*grins* Yes, I am not really much of a baby person, either! But I am perfectly happy for all my relatives to keep on having them. Such a lovely baby.

*grins* 'kay, I am done tantrumming now. And Small Human is still ridiculously cute. And even if I don't meet him for a while, I don't think he'll be less cute.

I wish applications for the thing you really want to do were easy.

(Is it wrong that my first reaction to the economic mess has been to enjoy the linguistic creativeness? 'credit crunched'-- what a charming verbing of a worrisome noun.)

I am sending all the job-ma and free time-ma and plane ticket-ma and anti-lurgy-ma I have your way.

I can't offer advice on how to get into public law whilst avoiding corporate firms, because I couldn't work out how to do it. What I will say is that (and it pains me to say it but it's true) it is only tow years and then there are public law jobs to be found once you're qualified.

I know it's not helpful, particularly, but feel free to email or whatever and talk it through with me any time you want...

If it were just public law, yeah, absolutely, but I'm mostly worried now about criminal law. Because I'm pretty sure this isn't something I can get into if I don't touch it during my training contract, but nowhere offers it! It's getting really frustrating.

Baaaaby! Anwar and I were just discussing yesterday how amusing small people are. I wish people close to me would have babies so I could take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the adorableness without too much of the noise and smell and responsibility.

What is janampatri? I tried google, and I tried Wikipedia, and both failed me. This is not on; the internet is supposed to serve my every educational whim!

I cannot do job, free time, or plane tickets; but I can offer freshly cooked scotch pancakes the next time we are in the same kitchen.

Yes! I keep seeing small-people things like, for example, teeny-tiny boots and duffle coats, and thinking, damn, why do none of my friends have babies I could buy them for?

A janampatri is a horoscope chart. It tends to be done for Hindu children at birth - Vedic religion is heavily biased towards astrology, and has an effect on name-choice and on arranged marriages and all sorts of things.

(What are Scotch pancakes? :))

Teeny tiny clothes, omg. So cute.

Scotch pancakes are a lot like ordinary pancakes, but have a lot more flour in, so they're thicker and smaller. And delicious.
