[livejournal.com profile] chiasmata has just made me watch Mamma Mia. It's great. It's bouncy, cheerful, high-coloured, full of silly accents, unashamedly feminist and critical of the patriarchal family, and it has Meryl Streep! Win!

Also: Merlin. Oh god, Merlin. I am a sucker for the legend in its original form, but, but, omg. Merlin. It's so lovely. It's so silly and joyful and Merlin and Arthur are so cute and delightful together and Merlin himself is so gawky and sweet. And Uther Pendragon is a real character! He isn't a one-dimensional tyrant, he's a fraught and conflicted king. And, oh my, Gwen. Excuse me, BBC? Is that a BROWN WOMAN on your show? An awesome, hot, potential-love-interest brown woman, who's sweet and smart and, lest we forget, awesome? I love her. Almost as much as I love Merlin himself, who is too lovely for words. And then there's Morgana, who has whole conversations with Gwen that pass the Bechdel test, and, and, and, yeah. I am only up to the third episode and I am kind of smitten with this show.

(This particular bit of flaily flaily joy is brought to you by Arthur declaring to the assembled court, "He's in love... with Gwen!" / "No, I'm not." / "Yes, you are." Dorky, lovely boys.)

Tell me, why do I get into amazing small fandoms two weeks after the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide sign-ups close?

This post makes me happy. :D

(Also, omg, Gwen is not only brown skinned and a girl and severely awesome, she gets PLOT. Proper good plot of anachronistic asskicking and destined queenhood. She is GREAT.)

SERIOUSLY! Like half of the last episode was about why Gwen is great and would be a fantastic queen and how she will lead the oppressed of the world - and I SWEAR I am not making this up! - to rise up and swordfight bad guys!

Ha, I went into Woolworths today & they were playing one of the songs, so I went into work and bought a copy, only to find that dad already ordered one so took it back. Instead I downloaded it and the soundtrack so have just watched it and now am listening to the soundtrack.

They played songs in work today and I was dancing down the aisles.

It is lovely, isn't it? I've had bits of it in my head all day, and I've been humming abstractedly in class.

Merlin is made of awesome and insanity and it only gets better. I adore it to itty bitty pieces for all the reasons you've just given and just because it's so darned fun!

I think I might be being punished for being an American.

Or possibly I am just not looking in the right place.

Merlin is my new guilty secret. (I live with hard-core legend geeks, and they wear their Do Not Approve faces when people talk about it.) But it's an excellent piece of silly, light television, and awesome in its Bechdel-test-passing and general good-character-having.

I refuse to even think about its (lack of) relationship with the legend, and just wish to fangirl it joyfully from the corner.

I think that's a very healthy attitude. :) There is much to be fangirled joyfully--I personally have become daftly fond of Gaius.

And (this is the sort of remark for which people hate me, or at least look at me strangely) later on, he's kind of slashy with Uther.

Apologies for posting the last comment twice; lj was playing up yesterday morning.

Ha, you wait till the latest. Uberuberuber gay. And so are Gwen and Morgana (yay!). And kick ass as well, i do like a slightly gothy lady who looks good in chain mail. Rar.

Anyway. There were actually quite a lot of brown people around briton in the mediaeval period. Moors and turks (which basically was anyone black or asian or arab respectively) were about, there's references to trading with celtic briton in the old testament (somewhere, don't ask me to find it), people got about quite a lot. Also, fact fans, thats where morris dancing comes from. Was originally called 'moorish' dancing...

Mmmm, yes. I am surprised, though, that a brown person is being included among the main cast without fanfare or comment. Well done BBC.

And once you do know about it, you can never seem to get it out of your head, somehow. It's always in the back of my head when I watch TV, now.
