sleepy raven is sleepy
Sep. 18th, 2008 09:41 pmI dreamed last night that
shimgray and I decided, in order to make some money, we would buy a Cessna light aircraft, insure it for more than it was worth and crash it into a tree.
We were just about to do this when I woke up. I don't know what I can conclude from this. Probably, REM sleep is really, really great, and my god, I'm tired. I'm so tired I've been sitting here for an hour having to consciously remember to keep my mouth closed. Law school makes me a sleepy sleepy human. Hours and hours of active concentration, I remember that. It's like school; that sort of bone-deep collapse-onto-sofa that school did to me, anyway. At any rate, this week is the hardest, and I'm two thirds through it now.
Which is not to say I'm not enjoying it. I wouldn't say I've made any friends yet, but certainly I have a few acquaintances, and people I sort of maybe know, like girl-who-worked-with-
sebastienne and girl-who-knows-
jacinthsong's-neighbour and girl-who-lives-with-
wadiekin, and people are nice. Also, I'm starting to see the shape of my work and options - I will have a full legal research project to start at Christmas, and I'm thinking of signing up for pro bono work before then, and it's nice, yes. There are also a lot of characters, some of whom I think are going to feature a lot, such as Ghastly American Woman (truly, truly ghastly; why do people not realise that no one cares about their tragic life story, especially in a lecture?), Pink-Shirted Tory (told me at great length about how awesome he was and how he would be my councillor, and how studying politics doesn't prepare you for real life, oh, you're a PPEist, how nice) and Schoolgirl Sally, who has pigtails and a silly skirt and sits in the front row and giggles inanely and actually I'm kind of a bitch, but it is quite fun to people-watch in lecture theatres, isn't it?
Also, my lecturers are kind of awesome. There are two of them, and I think I may have to call them Mens Rea and Actus Reus, because I am a dork and they are awesome. MR is an elderly ex-barrister with a cheery command of every legal anecdote ever told, quite capable of breaking off mid-sentence and saying thoughtfully, "There was a fruit-flavoured gentleman... Liberace, I think he was called? Does that ring a bell for anyone?" He is also a stickler for detail and accuracy of Latin pronunciation, and this afternoon, started telling an anecdote about Herbert Asquith before breaking off and asking, "Is there anyone here from Balliol?"
Shyly, I put up my hand.
"Ah, you do indeed have the tranquil consciousness of effortless superiority of the Balliol woman."
...and so on. Despite his habit of overruning by half an hour at a time so I didn't have a break between twelve and half five, I think I'm going to be quite fond of him.
AR, on the other hand, is a cheerful man with exciting hair who tends to introduce himself with, "Hi, my name is [Actus Reus] and in my past life I used to sue people." At the end of his lecture, he opened the floor to questions.
Quoth Mens Rea, "Have you had a haircut?"
"I'm so glad you noticed," was the thoughtful answer, followed by a confidential whisper to the room: "Isn't he sweet? He still notices, even though we've broken up. Ladies and gentlemen, my esteemed colleague."
I think I like them a lot. We shall see.
Anyway, I disappear. There is a meme. It is a meme where you take a picture of yourself just as you are.
chiasmata took this, so it does not really count, but I kind of like it. You can see the blurry sleepy Raven alongside the blurry sleepy kitten, and certainly I am in exactly the sort of state of mind in which one wears a hoodie designed for someone of twice one's height and body mass.
Me, as I am after four days of law school:

And now to bed, and to all a goodnight.

Hahaha, well explained. I'm having a week that can be summed up by this wardrobe choice. Except for "hoodie," substitute "National Geographic sweatshirt emblazoned with a giant white shark." \o/

Perhaps they are similar-ish to the reasons for Sophie-wanting-to-kill-your-spawn?
When I was writing that I almost typed as the html tag. OH MY BRAIN. OH HELP.

on 2008-09-19 01:28 pm (UTC)i love it when professors/lecturers/teachers turn out to be amazing like that. i still think that my favorite so far, hands down, is the intro to philosophy professor that i had my freshman year of college. he used the band motorhead as an example for everything and was probably the smartest person i'll ever meet in my entire life.
and just as a separate note, i am pretty sure that mostly all americans are like the one in your class. i sit in lecture/lab every time i have to go and listen to someone act like that. highly annoying. i think you should stab her with a pencil.

on 2008-09-19 09:51 pm (UTC)Philosophy tutors are invariably awesome, I find. I adored all of mine; they were all terribly eccentric and charming and marvellous.
(I ought not to stab all Americans! I like some of them, honest. But this particular one is truly ghastly. She needs stabbing liek woah.)
