raven: red tulips in a vase on a balcony, against a background of a city (stock - tulips)
[personal profile] raven
I'm having one of those weird nights when I'm afraid to sleep, and as well as that, with twenty-two hours to go, my remix is still about 2000 words off finished. ARGH OMG, etc. (Also, it's terribly bad, but I am resolutely not thinking about that.)

So in the interests of keeping me up and at it, a meme, seen everywhere but most recently with [livejournal.com profile] slasheuse and [livejournal.com profile] absinthe_shadow:

We all have things about our friends that make us slightly envious.

Not in a bad way, but in a 'Wow! I wish I had that person's hair/eyes/money/relationship/toenails/whatever.'

So tell me what about me makes you envy me. . . then post this in your LJ and see what makes me envious of you.

(It sounds like good fun, but it worries me that all the Oxford-types on the flist are in particular need of affirmation the week before term starts.)

And so this post has some non-self-obsessed content, have pretty music! I love this song with a passion right now: Vienna Teng - Lullaby For A Stormy Night.

I really ought to scribble a bit more about my last days in New York, actually - mostly spent wandering around Central Park, andI had a lovely dinner with [livejournal.com profile] musesfool - and the couple of days I spent in London - I was with Claire and Ben, and we went to see Guys and Dolls (two musicals in a week! terribly decadent, I know), and after that I went to an open day with a City law firm and felt quite harrowed by the propect of My Future and My Career-type things, and so on and so forth.

Argh, no. Remix.

The things you're able to do with words. I'm not just talking about fic, or good grammar and punctuation - all of which, of course, are admirable. But i actually look forward to seeing your entries on my flist, regardless of what you're talking about. Because it's so easy to read what you write - i love being able to read your posts quickly, without really having to think about it because everything just makes *sense* - and again, not just in the grammatical way, but more that i feel as though i always know what you mean. And i'm sure you'd do a much better job at putting this into words than i can! So yeah, i envy you that :)

PS - Lovely song! I have The Atheist Christmas Carol by Vienna Teng too, which is rather lovely. I can send it along if you've not heard it?

Oh, sweetie, thank you. That's a lovely thing to say.

And, yes! I'd love to hear it! I'm going through a VT phrase now, it seems.

Remix, ahhhhhhhh. I would be resolutely Not Thinking About Remix, except for the part where it's, y'know, due tomorrow and so I need to think about it. Yay, second writing all-nighter in a row!

As to what I envy about you... oh, gosh, um, this is embarrassing in a kind of fangirly way, but what don't I envy about you? I envy your ability to construct a coherent, clever, and thoughtful narrative out of your life; I envy your ability to see that narrative in daily things. That's the mark of a true writer. I envy your seemingly effortless ability to construct beautiful prose. And I envy how likeable you are--that sounds like a stupid compliment, but you seem to be the kind of person who's immediately easy to talk and relate to. I don't know many people like that.

Actually, though, I don't think "envy" is quite the right word, because I'm really glad you're as talented and sweet as you are. You know? Some people are amazing and it just makes you sick that you won't ever be that amazing; but some people are amazing and you're just happy they're around. :)

OMG REMIX. Thank god it's done, is all I'm saying.

And. *blushes to tips of hair* You are faaaaar too sweet to me. And you know I have fangirled you since the moment I met you, right? Because I have. Because you are just that amazing, so there. :P

First, let me say that Guys & Dolls is a fantastic, fantastic production. In fact, it's so good that my school's lackluster theatre program managed to not ruin it. Shock! Awe!

What I envy... I envy that you have been to India, that you can speak the language of your ancestors, that your immediate ancestors have a language other than English. Sure, my aunt's house is covered in green and my grandmother almost didn't show up to my uncle's wedding because it was in a Protestant church, but could she have told me anything about the Troubles? No, nothing. She probably didn't even know what they were.

You have a cultural heritage, and it gives you identity that a lot of nth generation Americans just don't have the opportunity to celebrate. I envy that.

Wow. Thank you for telling me this; it's something I would absolutely never have thought of, you know? And for all my endless griping about divided inheritance and all of that, I do appreciate my roots, a lot. Thanks for reminding me of that.

As people have said, envy isn't the right word. But if you need affirmation: you're clever, funny, beautiful, skilled with words, interesting, amazing, and if you really want to know what I envy about you: you're in your second year at Oxford. (Some of that is Oxford-envy, but more of it is the fears of a first year as she faces end of year exams.)

If this is in time, I will be online on and off for the next twelve-fourteen hours if you want to throw your Remix at me for the Swiftest Beta Ever. Or call me to panic about it, or whatever.

Thank you! You're a lovely person yourself, you know that? Evidenced by this very kind offer, which I didn't take up because I was actually writing my remix under the wire. And it was AWFUL. (You didn't sign up this time, did you?)

Thank you! :) I do know that, really, but I forget often enough that it does me good to be told. No, I didn't do Remix this time; Yuletide was insanity enough for me. Though I half regret it because until my boyfriend sent his D&D stuff to be rewritten a couple of days ago I hadn't written anything save essays and one lonely poem since December.

Your family. Your ethnicity. (I spent huge chunks of my childhood wishing I could be Indian not Jewish - the clothes are brighter colours and the food's better *grin*) The way you treat language and the way language treats you. The way you treat fandom and the way fandom treats you.

I'm occasionally convinced that the differences between being Indian and being Jewish are cosmetic at best. :P Thank you, honey. I really appreciate your nice words.

Oxford-envy, and the fact that you get to see Doctor Who and Torchwood when they are actually released, as opposed to (a) a year or more later, and (b) only by bit-torrent.

1. Your icon is so beautiful. Did you make it?
2. I envy you your humour. You make me laugh in the best of ways, and you seem to find humour in all sorts of wonderful places. This comes across in your writing and I envy that as well. I envy that you get travel so much. I envy you Oxford, of course, because you make it sound like such a wonderful, challenging, interesting intellectual experience and it makes me salivate a little. I envy you your second language. I envy how you write; you make whatever you're writing about come to life on the page. It's as if you're creating entire worlds in your prose.
3. Of course, envy could be replaced with all sorts of more positive words such as "adore" and "think it's so cool that you have" and similar. I think you're fantastic. You are one of my favourite people. Hands down.
4. And I can't wait to read your remix.

1. No, I didn't, but the sheer pretty stuck with me too. I love the image.
2. I envy you your fluency in two languages! I could never compare literature the way you do. In fact, I could never write about literature the way you do, full stop.
3. You are AWESOME. And I had to make a list of World's Fabbiest People, you'd be right up there. You are just that awesome.
4. *groan* Oh, dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Your writing style. Everything you write is interesting, and coherant, and witty, and just fantastic to read. It's amazing. I could never, never write as beautifully as you, but mostly that's ok, because I just enjoy reading your posts, I always love reading them, no matter what you're writing about.

Also you are just one of the most fantastically friendly, and loveable, and loved people I know. :)
