I'm in Edinburgh! It is very wet! I am still alive! My shoes are possibly not! Everything is ridiculously picturesque! I saw Mort! Death wore an apron with "Harga's House of Ribs" on it! There have been elephants! (Well, not real ones.) And books! And bookshops, and pubs, and extinct volcanoes, all with dogs!

Oh, and, the interview I just had was all right. Not great, not awful, but all right. And I had a horrible horrible realisation in the middle of the night that I will never be the sort of lawyer who makes any money. More later when dry.

(Also, I am being read to in Martian, and I got to the next stage of the GLS, and I think I may possibly have another interview post-August-17th. Life is chaotic. But good. I wish I had better shoes.)

Y'know, as long as that goes along with being a happy lawyer, then that's one of the best ways to be. Making it all about the money is very much the wrong way round, so try not to worry about it or being a particular type of lawyer (largely because all the ones who will be joining The Firm same time as me appear to be, well, dull. Decidedly not geeks :s)

The interview I just did was for a really rather notable firm - certainly the most notable of the ones I've applied to - and I thought the other applicants were... well, dull. And then my brain kept right on ticking over to legal aid and civil liberties and things I would be happy doing, dammit. Which is all a long way of saying yes, yes, you are absolutely right. :)

Wait, how long are you in Edinburgh? I get there on the 19th.

I go home on Tuesday, alas! How come you're in Edinburgh? Why did I not know about this? :)

Oooo me neither. Yaaaay human rights law! The law most lawyers don't consider to be 'real' law! When you get to that point I will totally form the poor fannish lawyers club with you.

Ohgod yes. Yaaaay, human rights law! Let's, I don't know, set up that fannish commune in West Virgina where we can have no money in peace. I rather look forward to it. :P

I love how the fannish commune in West Virginia has all but become an Internet meme at this point. :)

I can't remember why you wanted it in West Virginia, but clearly my subconscious thinks this is a great idea. There will be, I don't know, a cabin with pina coladas on tap.

(Also, I do not know why every fannish commune, in my head, features a preponderance of pina coladas.)

Mainly because I spent a lot of my childhood in cabins in the mountains of WV, and I firmly believe it is the most beautiful place in the world. Also, whoever is informing you that it's not in the South is CORRECT.

Oh god yes please pina coladas.

Eh, the South isn't so much my milieu -- I say the fannish commune should be in, like, northern Ontario or Quebec with the moose. :-)

I am being enthusiastically informed that West Virginia is not in the south. But, yes. Quebec also good, especially with meese.

Heh, well, being from Canada I tend to think anything much below Delaware as southern, if not Southern, so. :-)

... We could each have our own moose and use them as a form of really epic transportation!

Have you climbed thousands of stairs? That's all I ever seemed to do in Edinburgh.

Yes, indeed. It has been thoroughly enjoyable.

I'm pleased to hear it. I had a great time there, and I'm sorry I can't go to the festival this year--but, as so often, there are Brownies to be taken to pack holiday.

Given the weather, you should probably wish for wellies.

(My Edinburgh-bound friends are camping. If you see sodden and muddy Canuck zombies staggering about, that'll be them.)

My booooots. My lovely boots are indomitable Caterpillar ones with leather cuffs and worn laces and they keep the rain out and protect your feet from being trodden on by elephants and I miss them desperately.

(I shall watch out for sodden Canuck zombies. I imagine they are quite noticeable. *g*)

JEALOUS.

That is all.

Well, no, that's not all: enjoy yourself! And yay for surviving the interview.

You tooooo. I've been watching Star Trek movies this week, inspired partly by our revisitation of the series and partly by the imminent new film. I, um. I worry two things about this film: (1) that as we discussed, I won't be able to find anyone to go see it with me, and (2) that I will start crying in the theater as soon as the theme starts playing over the opening credits. This shoooow. Or perhaps rather this fraaaaanchiiiiiiise.
