Does anyone have, or know of someone who has, a room in central London to sub-let to a nice, friendly, tidy student (i.e., me, and stop laughing at the back) from March 14th/15th for two weeks, up until April 1st?

(And any suggestions of where else I can ask are gratefully appreciated too.)

I got a job. :) And it's really cool and exciting but not confirmed yet but it's so COOL and I don't want to jinx it.

Um, I can only think that I know when we hadn't got any accomodation we asked Quakers and they have a sort of 'pay what you can' idea. I didn't organise it, so I don't know how you'd contact them. Or where they were. And they call themselves friends, don't they? It's just other people who call them Quakers.

... I'm not certain that was at all helpful. Sorry.

I believe they call themselves the Religous Society of Friends. I have friends who are Friends - oh, yeah, me so eloquent today - and I'll ask if they know what you mean.

Hmm. Speaking as a friend who's a Friend (by upbringing if not actual membership), sounds like the sort of thing we'd do but I don't know if we're running one in London at the moment. My room in Watford will be spare for the first ten days of that, until I come home from Nottingham, and we could find somewhere for you to sleep after that (I can sleep on the floor), but it is quite a journey to do every day, in and out, and it sounds like you had better offers.

Dad has a friend with a flat in Surbiton, near Kingston, which might be empty.

Um, there are hostel-type places that let rooms/apartments on a weekly basis but I can't remember the links. Start with 'London Hostels' on Google.

(Might be cheaper just coming in and out from Oxford though)

Unfortunately, I don't have vac. residence here either! This is all on very short notice, hence the frantic flailing.

Ah. Not so good. We used to get kicked out on vacations too. Stupid unis.

http://www.gumtree.com often has short term leases. Other than that, I'm stumped.

Thanks! I've actually had a quick look there today already, but am having trouble sifting through the results. We shall see...

If needs be you could always camp on my floor, though I'm not central, so it would require travelling.

google brings up a few but I don't know how good they are.

I know that in the past during holidays I've stayed in Imperial's halls of residence but I don't know if that's just for the summer or not.

some of these (http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/england/london/) look quite nice if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks, dear. I'll sift through some of this data. Where is Roehampton, exactly? (And thank you for offering!)

SW15 is the post code. It's south of the river, 24hr bus to Hammersmith or there's a bus to Putney Bridge tube. But I suppose it's doable depending on where you're having to go each day.

If you need to spread it out over the two weeks, my house is 2 mins from Jessie's. However, I probably won't be in it - having vac res for the whole holiday - so I'd have to clear it with my parents, but I can't forsee huge problems.

If you're working in white city we're a 10-minute walk and a 40-minute tube ride away, so a bit of a trek, but that's nothing compared to what my dad does (Essex to Surrey every day). It's all on the one tube line, and we're far enough out that you could probably get a seat and hold it for the whole journey. I find commutes from mine into town are fine as long as I've got a good book.

I'm getting more and more panicked about this, so THANK YOU for offering. Potentially how long could I hang about without becoming a pain in the arse? And seriously, I wouldn't be imposing on your parents?

I honestly couldn't tell you - but if you're willing to essentially be autonomous, have my room and my keys and be more like a lodger than a house guest, I can't see you being obtrusive enough to bother anyone, y'know?

I don't reckon the whole 16 days would be do-able, even if I can convey adequately to my parents just how lovely you are, but perhaps a week at Jessie's / a week at mine? All this is entirely contingent on my checking with my parents, of course.

Like I said to Jessie below, I honestly don't want to impose on people. I'm going to do my best to find a place, but if it comes to it and I don't have anywhere, a week with your family and another week with Jessie's would be fab, and I'd be really grateful. (Contingent on your parents being amenable, o'course.) Thank you.

White City, also on the Central Line! Would such a thing be workable?

I don't see any major problems with. Have to double-check with the parents...

We have a spare room if you don't mind sharing it with laundery. It's about an hour from here to white city, I guess.

Only part that might be minorly awkward would be friday evenings - I'm not in cos I'm at college, but the rest of the family do the Jewish thing... we don't actually keep shabbat, so no worries about light switches and that, but if you were around you might end up having to sit down to a full Shabbat dinner with my family and without me.....

*grins* I'm trying not to impose on people if at all possible, so if I really don't find a place, I shall come back and cling to you and [livejournal.com profile] sebastienne. THANK YOU. I mean, A LOT. It's so appreciated.

And re: Shabbat - I honestly don't mind, and would consider it a learning experience, as long as your family don't mind my being there...

If it all falls into place - and fingers crossed that it will - I need to be near White City. Thank you so much for this offer; are you sure I wouldn't be imposing, given that I'd be hanging around for two and a half weeks?

Ooh! That sounds like a very cool job! We're a bit over half an hour from White City (you have to change to the Central line, unfortunately: the Central line is poo).

Having checked with Mike, he says "Will it be at weekend too, or is she going home then?" and also wonders if you will be out gallivanting every / most evenings.

(We both get a little stressy when there are People In Our House, me more so, but I'll have the days to myself, as you'll be off working.)

It really is very exciting. I don't to jinx this, so fingers staying firmly crossed.

It would be at weekends too, so, tell you what: I'll keep hunting and nagging people, and only if I get really, really stuck, I'll get back to you. Would be lovely to see you when I'm in London regardless, actually. It's been a long time.

That would probably be the best thing, tbh: sorry....

But if you get stuck, or need a couple of nights at the start / end, then let me know!

Be good to meet up with you while you're here: there should be a grand epic lunch of the slash types, or something!

Ooh, I went on the tfl website in an attempt to find out where White City was (it's on the 72 bus route from outside my uni, approx 38 minutes apparently, so prob about an hour away). If you get the job. It sounds interesting
