Jan. 26th, 2006 05:46 pmSitting here at my window, looking out across the Ashmolean, I can see a lot of flashing blue lights. In the twenty minutes since I went to the Philosophy Faculty library and back, someone on Beaumont Street has been hit by a car. Judging from the volume of the emergency services and purposeful activity, the person is either very badly hurt or dead. The street is just filling up with cars and people and associated gawkers, and it's getting darker so the lights are eerie.
As Claire said, just now: kinda puts that essay crisis in perspective. It's horrible of me, but I hope to God it isn't one of us under that cover.

on 2006-01-26 06:56 pm (UTC)We once had a fatal car crash right under our windows at my last office, which was unbelievably grim. I didn't see the moment it happened, but I sure as hell heard it, and then it was impossible not to look. The car was a disaster, and when the emergency workers came up, looked, spoke to each other, walked away slowly, then returned bearing sheets... suffice it to say I didn't get much more done the rest of that day.
