raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (doctor who - romana)

According to one of the local newspapers, the temperature hit -14ºC overnight. I don't know if this is true, but I can believe it. We have no snow, because it's too cold and too clear, and everything is now coated with frost. None of that delicate dusting that lives in song and story, this is kickass thick frost that has refused to shift. The streams that irrigate the fields round about are frozen solid. It is is all very Dickensian. I would stay inside and admire it from the warm, or, alternatively, go to the beach, which must be very pretty if freezing, but sadly I had to go to maths tution. And I was not teaching, I was being taught. I hate maths. Thankfully [livejournal.com profile] hathy_col is coming round later with Christmas spirit and the second-to-last of the Jagaroth, and I'm looking forward to it.

So, in the meantime, some fic recs. No Christmas Invasion stuff, as none of the posted snippets has really caught my eye as being particularly good (and this includes my own) but for some reason, there's been an avalanche of One!fic. I like:

Closed Circle by [livejournal.com profile] calapine. Eee. Freaky cool timeline-twisty fic where Rose goes to meet the first Doctor and Susan, and she's old and the Doctor is young, and it's all terribly sad.

Lineage by [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4. Susan and her grandfather go to Java, and she meets the saddest man she's ever seen. This is also timeline-twisty and very sad, and it totally ignores Lungbarrow, thank god.

And, also technically One!fic, [livejournal.com profile] prydonianfic - people writing university fic, yay! All of these feature Theta Sigma, Koschei and Ushas, who will, bless their hearts, grow up to be the Doctor, the Master and the Rani. I've done one, The Bell Jar, [livejournal.com profile] calapine did one for me, First Steps, and [livejournal.com profile] wishfulaces did another one, Anticipation, for [livejournal.com profile] dw_santa, and if there's any more I'd like to be told about them. There's also I Speak For Gallifrey ([livejournal.com profile] calapine again) which fits the general definition but is far too scary to be included with all the light and fluffy stories. The appeal of it, I think, is you can see how in their baby selves what they're going to be like, and all the stuff that makes them friends now is going to make them deadly enemies when they're grown up.

But mostly it's just a chance to see baby!Doctor and squee a bit.

Now more maths. I hate maths, yes.

Closed circle was fantastic. I finally decided to re-add a load of coms last night (Kibble was writing me a fic but I really really was after all manner of bizarre fics last night so i went nuts on communities again) so I caught it there :D

I remember some of it from when I used to be in [livejournal.com profile] new_who, I should go and catch up with more of it :)

Icon lust, first of all.

Have read all of the recs, but love them all to bits.

I can't help thinking of Prydonian fic as the DW equivalent of high school AU, but canon. And far better written.

I think we'll have to wait for the next series to get a proper feel for Ten's actual tone.

Hee, I like that thought. I've never been in a fandom with high school AU, so I can only imagine the horror.

*grin* Yes, it is horror, some of the time. Mind you, there can be anything on ff.net. ;)

Hee, yes. And I'm waiting with trepidation for actual high school AU to pop up any day; it wasn't as likely with Nine since casting CE as a teenager would have been stretching it a bit* but I'm terribly worried at the prospect of teen!Ten...

(* however, there is House high school AU, so maybe age is no barrier.)

Now I'm just thinking of them having to attend school for plot purposes... *giggle* Terrible thought. Because you know the Doctor would wear the glasses and pose as band geek or something.

(Really? Scary. Mind you, they get aged down, don't they?)

And Rose could ask why he isn't posing as a teacher and he could claim he's hip and young and Down With the Kids *g*

(I've been too frightened to look, to be honest...)

*giggle* Officially worried by this. Though would that mean that Rose is posing as teacher? She could have practised using psychic paper. And she would refuse, as she'd already gone through it once.

(Yeah. Probably the best way. Especially with something like House... fics set when House was in High School would be interesting, even though I don't know the fandom as well as I should, but aging down characters to make them accessible just boggles the mind.)
