Urgh. I hate Mondays with a passion. Three hours of lectures (I'm an arts student, damn it!) from ten to one, then Logic preparation for a couple of hours, a brief trip to Nuffield to hand in Economics to Nathaniel, then Logic class until seven. Today's lectures were okay, but I was stupidly tired as I always am these days - I ended up scribbling three pages for British Politics regardless - so I didn't appreciate the interesting bits. The Microcononmics was boring beyond belief, but I'm making myself go because I need them. I suck at Microeconomics. My mathematics just isn't up to it - I'm creaking my way through GCSE maths while everyone else expertly manipulates utility functions of the sort u(x1,x2)=x1+x2 which are apparently very easy if you are not me.

I exaggerate, perhaps. I can manage the above example. I can even manage indices and root powers and suchlike. I fall apart over differentiation and calculus. Ah, never mind. The University are holding a series of lectures on Mathematics For Stupid People Without AS, so I shall survive.

I also suck at Logic. My problem is expressing myself clearly enough for Bob to appreciate. I absolutely hate working as part of a group, because I'm sure I'd be much less stressed about it otherwise. As it is, I always get a host of red ink abbreviations such as RIC (raise in class), GC (get clear) and my personal favourite, RO (do you have religious objections to writing in full sentences?) alongside much histrionics in the margin at my utter crapitude. I'm hoping to transfer from Logic to Mill at the earliest possible opportunity.

Talking of Mill, the lectures on him get more and more interesting. I'm much more enthused about this aspect, but sadly don't actually have the tutorials on it until Trinity term.

So after the Logic I gave up on life on general, dumped all my things in a heap on the floor and wended my way to Holywell Manor for the DocSoc barbecue. Which was much fun, although I did miss the actual barbecue aspect and subsisted on cheese rolls and veggie sausages. There was Torchwood squee. (Every post on my flist, just about, was squeeing about Torchwood this afternoon. It was so very amusing and indicative of the all-pervasiveness of this fandom.) And then there was random meta over the Targets and, of all things, Logopolis.

(I did bring some Targets with me, I must confess. They sit next to Logic and Mill in my bookshelf and look intellecually inferior.)

I met [livejournal.com profile] narahttbbs, whom I have only met in passing before, and two other freshers, and all in all it was the one thing about my day that was not very tiring and headache-inducing. Actually, all this sounds like I had a terrible day, which I didn't; it was just very intense, as days here so often are. Everything happens all at once.

And talking of that, I have three choices of what to do with my night tomorrow night. Either I can go to the Turf pub quiz night with Sarah and two of her friends - we're planning to make a team one of these nights - or I can go to the Union and hear a talk by Salman Rushdie and go to the Purple Turtle after, or I can go to Exeter to hear Phillip Pullman address the Writing and Literacy society. I reckon Phillip Pullman. [livejournal.com profile] kuteki! Can I just turn up, or do I have to sign up or something?

And now I will leave you all with just one last thing. Every couple of days I get an email entitled "Balliol Misc", which is sort of personals/classifieds/advertisements all combined - if you want to address the entire college about something, you submit it to the general email. Each item gets a place in the subject line of the email. This is the latest:

Lost Bone, Choir Drunks, Majlis Night, OUSU Council, For Grabs, Vijay Joshi, Czech President, Cocktails D'Or, Matriculation Photo, Lost Diary, Interviews Help, Colour Photocopying, Table Football, Fit College, Straw Boater

(And yes, someone has lost a bone, the choir are standing everyone drinks, the Czech President is coming to visit, Balliol is getting hammered by Trinity in the fit college stakes, and someone else wants to borrow a straw boater.)

I swear everyone here is batshit insane.

my personal favourite, RO (do you have religious objections to writing in full sentences?)

Hee. If I ever teach, I must remember that one.

Yay Torchwood! Yay Targets and Logopolis!

It's not what I would call intuitive. I also like "WMD" which stands for "just because you haven't found it doesn't mean it's not there".

Eee, Torchwood. And there was much Romana II discussion!

I think you just turn up, I wouldn't be late though. Also, could I possibly have your number?

By the way I saw you today again and you were right in front of me, and I think I will have to post pics so next time you recognise me! You don't mind of I post the ones from the other week do you?

I've emailed you my number. Please, please just tap me and tell me who you are! It's easier that way!

Hey, go ahead! I really want to see it. :)

u(x1,x2)=x1+x2 - what? *is scared* I don't understand that, and I'm kind of doing half a maths degree at the moment.

Someone lost a bone? Their own, or a trophy of their most recent killing spree?! We get a similar e-mail every week or so, including this week a note on parent formals:
Nobody is to leave formal until the Senior Man has bowed out. Should it become apparent to you that your meal is about to reverse its trajectory, please leave immediately and you will face a far more lenient sconce. This is in the interest of the environment around you and your own reputation.
*g* People here are insane, too.

It's probably because I missed out half of it! It's a utility function for calculating consumer preferences. Very uninteresting, I assure you.

It was a plastic bone that was originally part of a caveman costume. Insane, I tell you.

Heee, I like that! Particularly "in the interest of the environment around you and your own reputation"!
