A note about the BSG theme

Okay, I'm spamming. But I've got to share this, because it is weird, and, um weird. Anyway, for those who did not know, I'm an Indian Hindu, and my parents, while not extremely devout, do like to keep certain aspects of the religion. For this reason, I used to know one or two Sanskrit shlokas and mantras, memorised when I was little. The only one I can still recite is the Gayatri Mantra. It begins "Om bhoor bhuvah svah...", and while I could write out the whole thing, I will spare you.

Now this is the weird part. I can hear it in the the Battlestar Galactica theme. It's stupid, I know. jacinthsong uploaded it and I'd been after it for ages, so I downloaded and stuck it on repeat. And I swear I can hear the mantra at the beginning, in the wolves-down-a-well part. I'm going crazy, clearly, and I should stop listening to it, but although the match isn't quite perfect, but so nearly almost that I keep listening for the next part. I am losing it.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was deliberate, in fact: the music's been deliberately done to sound unusual-yet-mystical-and-spiritual, which is what Hinduism is to most of the target audiance.

It's definitely there - that was actually how I found the mp3, googling the mantra from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica%282003%29#Main_title). So you're not going crazy ;)

I think it's the UK version. I think. It's the same as the downloaded eps I have, which are off Sky One... so yes, the UK version. I'm now intrigued to hear the other version.

Actually, having read a bit further I now see that the US season two one is also the one with lyrics. Which must mean I've heard it, 'cause I've seen a couple of eps, but I was probably going 'Oh, this bit's always the same' and ignoring it....

(It doesn't really bother me, to be honest. I was vaguely sad that I missed Desperate Housewives, but that's about it recently: we DLed Dr Who, of course. It's been about a year since we had TV, 'cause the Sky subscription ran out about two months before we moved and drplokta didn't think it was worth renewing for such a short space of time. I didn't notice for a month, and then only because I thought I'd see if there were any good eposodes of Futurama on the TiVo. And then we moved and we don't seem to have quite got around to sorting it out. Which kinda implies we don't need to...!)

Now, here's an only slightly related question, if you don't mind my asking: your family celebrate Diwali, right? (I think you posted about it last year.) When you were, say, eight, what things did you like to do for Diwali?

(I'm looking for something I can run for a group of seven to ten year old girls, one or two of whom are Hindu, by way of balancing all the Christmas stuff we'll be doing.)

Also, I've saved your list of things to take to university-- next year, my mother will be yelling "a VASE!?!" just like Colleen's is this year.

We do indeed celebrate it. If I had a functioning scanner, I would show you some pics of me at eight celebrating it. Unfortunately it's broken, so I'll just tell you. I used to like lighting diyas - you could use ordinary tealights - and put them on windowsills and in lanterns. I also liked the food - who doesn't? - and cutting the fruit for the puja, and one thing we always used to have is fireworks. Sparklers for the little ones and proper rockets when I was older.

Um. what else? It's just the atmosphere of celebration, I guess. Nothing we did in particular. Sorry not to have been more helpful.

That all sounds good-- we'll be looking at firework safety anyway because of Guy Fawkes' Night, so we can link that in, and we could maybe do something with lanterns, or even sparklers. What sort of lanterns? Do you make them the way we sometimes do for Christmas, by putting glass paint on an old jam jar?

It is the mantra.... it was always fam. to me .. untill recently
I picked it up ... quite strange to find it in a western show..dont you think ... then there is lost .. with the button .. thing ... and Darma Inc...
