raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (balliol)

I didn't go on the Phantom trip, in the end. This is because of some bad communication but mostly total disorganisation on my part, and to all concerned, I'm really sorry. I don't mind missing the trip, but I do mind pissing people off. I'm sorry.

Today, therefore, has been busy. The day after the results came out, I got a big massive huge package in the post from Balliol (hence this icon, which I can now use without fear of jinxing myself), and have spent all my time since sifting through it. I need to fill out medical registration forms, go and see my doctor and get vaccinated against, well, everything (specifically, MMR and meningitis C, and I may as well finish getting vaccinated against hepatitis B), go and see my dentist too (this would be my much-too-attractive-to-be-a-dentist dentist), get several passport photos of myself, fill out attached forms, and just read the things they have sent me.

Also, need to sort out tution fees and other stuff. (I get a Bodleian library card! Is it wrong that this makes me squee?)

Once this is all done, if it ever is, I need to go into Pritchard's as well, have a word with Tony about finishing work, and go through my reading list (might as well put the discount to good use) before getting back and then perhaps looking into booking my driving test. If I don't pass before I leave, I'll cry, but crying does seem likely as I don't get any better.

Argh, real life bites back. Briefly on the fandom front, anyone who requested a fic will get a fic (or drabble). Additional requests may be considered. And I may even attempt to finish watching Destiny of the Daleks today.

Still, I'm quite excited about all this. I'm actually going away to university in a month. Hee.

[If I disappear and don't come back, it's 'cause the internet is cranky today.]

Heck no! I'd squee. I *did* squee when I got my Harvard ID, and finally had access to Widener. Four stories of books above ground, four stories of books below ground, and secret passages to other underground libraries. EEEEEEE! It doesn't have anywhere near the collection that the Bodleian has, but it's the closest you get to it in the US, I think.

I have those, too! Underground libraries and secret passages beneath the Bod and the college, and access to all the colleges and univerity libraries.

Colour me excited. :)

OMFG THEY'VE ALREADY GIVEN YOU A BOD CARD? Great, now I'm going to be jumping on the postman every day to see if Wadham have sent anything...XD

(In other words, of course it's not wrong!)

*pets* Calm down, my love, they have sent me an application form for a Bod card, which will apparently also serve as a university student card. We get them when we go up.

But I'm squeeing. :)

Speaking of Oxford, have you read Gaudy Night? If not, you must immediately!

I haven't! What's it about?

It's one of Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane mysteries, and it's set at Oxford in the 1930s amid students and scholars! (If memory serves, Peter Wimsey went to Balliol.) It's full of book geekishness, and there's punting. It's pretty much the best thing ever, really. I wish I'd read it before I visited Oxford last year...

Ooh, sounds lovely. I shall have to look out for it in the shop.

You visited Oxford? When? I was going back and forth for interviews and open days and suchlike, so I'm wondering...

I made a day trip to Oxford with [livejournal.com profile] ljs last spring (2004). She had done some of her PhD research there awhile back, so she showed me around, but we didn't actually go inside any classrooms, just wandered about. Mainly I remember that I was very jetlagged and it was a very cold day!

Eeee! Gaudy Night! *seconds the recommendation* The TV adaptation with Edward Petherbridge is also lovely, though it doesn't have the quote about the ducks which is one of my favourite things in the history of everything.

Yes, the Petherbridge TV version is very good (and beautifully cast), but they just couldn't fit in all the great stuff that was in the book!

Your place names (Balliol and Bodleian) make me think of Dorothy Sayers. :-)

Heh, I really must read some of her books.

It's mainly "Gaudy Night" as it plays in Oxford itself. I think Wimsey was a member of Balliol, but don't quote me on that.

Yay for library cards!

I need a gap year icon. (I need more icon space. Hmm, maybe I need a paid account. Hmm, maybe I need some money. Hmm, maybe I need a job. Hmm, maybe I should write a CV. What's this shiny thing over here? Let's look at this! CV, no longer needed, as am distracted by shiny thing! But I digress.)

I'm going to call you, tonight or tomorrow night, whenever I can ge the phone and get through, to confirm final arrangements for my visit. *is excited*

Indeed! And yay for shiny things!

I'm home now - about 5.30 - so call me whenever you like. :)

Yeah, don't you just love the paperwork? ;)

That said, it is really cool. I'm still getting those twinges of excitement and oh-my-God-this-is-Oxford!-ness three years later on the threshold of my postgrad degree (and believe me, the bureaucracy for that is insane!).

Your icon is fantastic - where did you get it? And has anyone made a Hertford one?

:)

Hee! Such excitement!

I got it from this post (http://www.livejournal.com/community/oxonians/42131.html), I think, and there is a Hertford one.
