raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (doctor who - writer)

Urrgh. Much too tired. And I went to Sainsbury's and bought a jar of mayonnaise and a lemon smoothie and paid for it with a twenty-pound note, and the man glared at me. I don't know why.

Yes, fannish notes and queries. I am going to spam you all today, so beware.

-Yesterday's fic needs editing, and finishing it would also be good. I'm still amazed, considering I hardly ever write in daylight hours and consequently my fic output is at its lowest at this time of year. But, yes, six thousand words to edit and finish off. I won't mind doing that.

-[livejournal.com profile] likethesun2 made a lovely post about all sorts of fannish meta-ish things, like co-writing, genre canon and general fandom craziness, but she also writes about the time she spent M*A*S*H fandom, which was quite possibly my favourite fandom experience. Also, she quotes me, and while I can only vaguely remember saying it, it's a very nice example of a dichotomy of two fic writers who are the same age with a similar background, both general and fannish, and are very good friends; and yet write in such different ways. I often think that if I co-wrote with her, the world would explode from the scary meta.

-[livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 has realised that she's not the only person with a predilection for the sick and wrong, and has started [livejournal.com profile] who_otp for old-skool pairings. I am happily on the Four/Romana II bandwagon, but there is also Five/Tegan (and Turlough, as Five gets everywhere) and apparently I am not the only person who wonders what the Doctor, the Master and the Rani got up to when skiving lectures. Go forth and join it, etc.

-The important bit:

Voting is open for the Mauve And Dangerous Awards 2005, and will remain open until August 25th. Please take part, if you're into this sort of thing; most of the nominated stuff is really amazing and yay, awards.

On that note, all my posted Doctor Who fic is nominated and thank you very much, whoever did so. I'm very flattered.

-And to finish, as Hannah has been telling me at possible opportunity, it is Thursday. Quite apart from not getting the hang of them, there's only one week to go! Urrgh.

I think, all in all, M*A*S*H was my best fandom experience, too. It was a combination of the closeness of the community, the quality of the fic, and the point at which I was in it--i.e., when the fandom was just gaining momentum again, all the new talent was coming in, everyone was incredibly prolific. And also maybe you never quite get over your first real fannish love. :)

I've always found your approach to writing incredibly instructive, because it is so different from mine. It makes me think more about what I'm doing, knowing that it's not the only way it can be done. (You're right: I think if we ever co-wrote, we would cause the heat death of the universe or something. Maximum entropy. Uh, in a good way.)

Congratulations on all the nominations! From what I've seen of your DW fic, you deserve plenty of recognition.

It wasn't my first fannish love, now I look back, which makes me even more certain it was just a little bit magic. All the right circumstances came together and so many friendships were formed. So nice. :)

I was thinking about it again today, because I was writing a very formulaic fic - that is, formulaic in the sense that it has a very strict plot and rigid structure, so not much in the way of stream-of-consciousness - that nevertheless generated one of those lines that I didn't consciously make up. And it wasn't something I'd have that character say, initially, as it sounded a little dark, not flippant enough, but I've left it in. It's having an effect I didn't plan but am nevertheless enjoying.

And I suppose that's it, that's what I was trying to get at two years ago.

Talking about writing never ceases to be fun, does it? :)
