raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (doctor who - writer)

It's a very hot, sunny day, and I'm feeling a little blue. I just spoke to Hannah, Clare and Emily, and managed to insult their collective taste in films, ice-cream and men in one fell swoop, which says something about my current tact level.

It's been a weird couple of days, certainly. Patrick asked me out to lunch yesterday, which was very nice, as it was equally hot and sunny and we were sitting by the marina. We managed to kill four hours chatting, and watching the ducks (and what we thought was a water vole) skim lazily across the water surface. I honestly believe my healthy, civilised, affectionate friendship with Patrick is one of the best things that came out of my sixth form years; I still don't regret the breakup, but we're good friends now, without that spark. He was telling me yesterday about his girlfriend, Mai, and how he's planning to visit her in Vietnam over Christmas. He's on a gap year, which sounds much more interesting than just going straight to university, and has got a job in a metal workshop. (He said he hopes not to lose any thumbs. I hope he's kidding.)

My parents held a dinner party in the evening. I was just thinking up an excuse to be elsewhere when Clare phoned. She came over and I fed her cookies, which she wouldn't eat, and looked after her as well as I could.

And that's it, really. Walked into the village earlier and had an entertaining morning working in the shop. It was very quiet, so Niall and Mike got to talking about what they would do if they won the lottery, and I listened to them with some amusement while serving the very occasional customer. Everywhere you go today it's hot and lazy, and I almost wish my shift had been longer, as I might as well have earned money not doing very much in the shop rather than sitting and not doing very much at home.

In good news, I appear to have acquired a pay rise. It's now £4.50/hour rather than just four pounds, but I suppose that's something. Tony has unexpectedly departed on holiday, so we don't know what's brought this on.

So, I'm just feeling blue. I have a new laptop, which I'm enjoying playing with, but I'm not really using much because it refuses to connect to the internet no matter what we do to it. I rather think I'll just watch DVDs on it for the rest of today. I'm in no mood to either socialise or be productive.
