raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (doctor who - ten)

I have noticed something. Neutrons are, as the name suggests, neutral; this is why isotopes of an element have differing physical and not chemical properties. They cannot be forced to flow towards either cathode or anode. Therefore, reversing the polarity of the neutron flow will achieve nothing whatsoever.

I'm quite pleased with this little realisation.

Anyway, moving on. I spent yesterday afternoon very pleasantly, going to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with [livejournal.com profile] purplerainbow. I was early, so I had a wander around Liverpool, into Waterstone's to find something new to read - I've finished everything I took to Australia, which I should actually review one of these days - but didn't really find anything. Yesterday, I was sorting through my bedside table drawers, finding all sorts of treasures in the shapes of letters and postcards and photographs (the plan is to pin them to my wall at university), and came across a small pink card I had apparently never opened. It turned out to be a "congratulations on passing your GCSEs" card, with WHSmith vouchers inside. So I went down there, and one thing sort of led to another and I now seem to have acquired a DVD of Pyramids of Mars. [livejournal.com profile] hathy_col has similarly come into possession of The Five Doctors, so we're having another Old-Skool-Who geekfest next week.

Talking of which, I love my fandom. All the stuff that has come to light since I've got back makes me squee. The Doctor's new costume is ohmygodtehsex, really. It's sort of what would happen if you mixed up Sherlock Holmes and the Kaiser Chiefs with a bit of what the BBC are calling "geek chic" and it's lovely. I was never that fond of the leather jacket. I mean, it does work for Nine, but the thing I really love about the new outfit is that it really does give off an air of a Time Lord trying to pass as human but not quite getting it right. (The Converse! I want some.) And the Doctor is a geek, as well. His claimed defining feature is his doctorate and he says things like "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow." Such a geek, yay.

The squee continues: I have also learned that Anthony Stewart Head is guest-starring in an episode and Stephen Fry writing one. (If they turn out to be the same one, I will renounce atheism.) And Sarah Jane Smith coming back, too! There's justification for Pyramids of Mars all by itself.

Before all this comes The Christmas Invasion, and it's extremely amusing to try and assemble the plot from the filming pics that are flying around. The most memorable one is Rose and Mickey carrying the Doctor (who is in pyjamas) from somewhere to somewhere else. Another pic seems to feature Peter Davison - at least, I think it's him. All very intruiging.

Back to yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Psychedelic and warped and Johnny Depp is very good, but has a strange vocal resemblance to Michael Jackson. It's dark, more like the book, and I haven't had so much fun at a film for ages.

Afterwards, Hannah and I got rained on, but eventually dried off and had a very nice dinner and made plans for next week. All good fun. And now, I think I want to go to bed. Or write more Doctor femmeslash. I haven't quite decided.

*wails* Why can't they show Doctor Who in the US? It sounds so very interesting. Oh well; I guess this is what DVD burners and the internet are for!

And on a less important note, the new seasons of Stargate/Atlantis started about three weeks ago. Atlatnis is fun and fresh and Rodney McKay is my hero, but SG1? It's really, really, really good for the first time in years and they've even taken care of RDA's exit properly with:

Daniel: "...but for the first time, I'm scared."
Jack: "...I'm...hungry?"

See? Good stuff, you should really catch it when it premiers in the UK.

I feel for you. I do hope you get it before season twenty-eight season two launches here. Bring on the Christmas Invasion, dammit.

I haven't seen much of SG-1 or Atlantis in ages. I don't even know when they're going to air. Spoil me for SG-1, go on. What's happening?

Our public broadcasting show British programs, perhaps they'll get it. Then again, its budget is being slashed left and right. :( Then there's Scifi, but also the fact that America sure does love to remake British programs. The Office? That was terrible.

SG1, hmm. Well, Jack's gone, I don't know where, exactly. Retired, different post, I don't know. Ben Browder from Farscape's come in at Lt. Colonel Mitchell, who flew in the battle over the Ancient outpost at the end of S7. Jack said, after Mitchell was shot down and injured that he could do anything, that he could do anything. Mitchell wanted to lead SG1, but when he arrived at the SGC, Jack hadn't told him that SG1 was dismantled. Sam's off at Area 52 for the first five (?) episodes (AKA Amanda Tapping was having her baby), and Daniel, complete with scruffy awful beard, is up for reassingment. Teal'c is off with the Jaffa Nation, trying to get it organized.

Then, Vala comes in through the stargate with a tablet that promises an Ancient tresure on Earth, they end up in some sort of hollow hill outside of Glastonbury (I hope I spelled that right) and after the typical danger & near-death, they (Mitchell, Daniel, Vala and Teal'c) find a treasure horde including an Ancient communication device. Vala, by the way, is in on this whole thing because she's put a braclet on her and Daniel's wrists that will kill them if they're separated for too long. Coniving bitch, huh?

Back at the Jaffa Nation HQ, Gerak is undermining Teal'c's idea of democracy. He manipulates the Jaffa Council into assigning representation based off of military strength, of which he has the largest. Compensate much, Gerak?

Vala's Anciet tablet also says that not all of the Ancients ascended, and that Merlin was an Ancient. I have no idea what this has to do with anything but it seemed like a pretty big plot point at the time! Daniel and Vala active the Ancient communication device and are transported into another, medievil galaxy. This galaxy worships the Ori, who are Ancients that believe that because they're so powerful they should be worshiped and help regular humans ascend. They're very insistent upon everyone agreeing upon this and are not thrilled when they find out that the people Daniel and Vala have transported into are trying to undermine them.

Eventually, Daniel and Vala meet with Ori clergy and the Ori learn from them that they're from another galaxy (because univerise-spanning all knowing beings are only that when the subject matter isn't infinite) and send a prior to a planet with SGC presence to convert everyone. Mitchell brings the prior back to the SGC, where the new head of the SGC is meeting with Gerak, the compensating Jaffa. Meanwhile, Daniel and Vala find the Ancient communication device in their galaxy, and try to use it to go back to Earth. They're interrupted by the Ori and placed in motral peril, but not before waking up briefly on Earth and telling the new CMO that the Ori are kind of evil.

Mitchell tries to escort the prior to a holding room, but he burns himself to death. And that's basically all that's happened in the last three weeks, and was also me being concise. Pretty bad, mm?

Oh, good! I could only afford one, and went for it on the grounds it's Four (yay Four) and has Sarah Jane in it, whom I've never seen. Not touching it is proving a strong test of willpower. :)

Do you have 'The Three Doctors' on DVD? I have it on video and DVD and seriously don't want it... I've been waiting to off-load it, in a nice way, so if you'd like it I'd be happy to send it. Either format.

*whines* Still waiting for either Sci-Fi or BBSA to carry Dr. Who....

I may have to re-evaluate my boycott of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I'd been told it's more true to the book and the fact that it has Danny Elfman's music in it serves as an additional recommendation.

The BBC are being hardline on it, it seems; they just don't want to take it to the States. That said, I'm still hoping you lovely people get it before season twenty-eight season two kicks off next year. Is it Christmas yet?

How come you're boycotting Charlie? One of my favourite books, and Johnny Depp one of my favourite actors, so I was keen.

On principle. I don't like remakes and I HATE Johnny Depp with a passion :P But now I'll have to go because I LOVE movies which are rather true to the original book concepts.
