Doctor Who - Bad Wolf
Jun. 11th, 2005 09:20 pmWell.
That wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. The previews, showing the various game shows, made me want to cringe a bit, so I liked that immediate dark aspect shown in the actual show.
-Actually, I really, really loved the beginning of the episode. Dizzy, spinning, confused Doctor - don't we all feel like that at times? Hee.
-And who wants to know what the three of them were doing in Kyoto, hmmm?
-The Weakest Link was a bit meh, but had its moments. I spotted one of the other contestants was called Colleen, which later amused Colleen no end. "But Colleen was clever!" Yes, she was!
-Trinny and Susannah and Jack were fun, but I have a feeling that certain Americans may have missed the joke entirely. Did What Not To Wear ever air over there?
-The passing reference to "President Schwarzenegger" slayed me.
-Actually, Jack in general slays me. He's so flirty and sexy all the time - he has no objection to being naked in front of millions of viewers, and, please don't tell me where he was hiding that gun because I think I already know.
-And then he greets the Doctor with, "Hey, handsome." Colleen said later that Jack and the Doctor don't flirt so much as have a very live-in lover air to them. This is so true it actually silenced me for a moment.
-The bit where they storm the studio and Rose is disintegrated - oh, that got me. The emotional level suddenly went up a notch, and I do think our heroes reacted exactly as you might have expected them to. Jack goes crazy, shrieking and fighting and kicking arse, while the Doctor stills, grows quiet and shuts off. Perfect counterpoints to each other.
-Who else was fooled, and thought the Doctor really was going to shoot that guy? It took me a moment to remember - hang on, this is the Doctor we're talking about.
-The discovery of the TARDIS really made me giggle, for some reason. It was so random and yet so right.
-"Someone's been playing a long game with humanity." Finally, that episode title makes sense!
-The controller really got to me. She's a definitively tragic figure, doomed from the start, but she does everything she can, everything and anything in order to bring the Doctor to this place at this time. And she dies happy.
-Daleks! 'Nuff said there.
-And when the Doctor asks, "Doesn't that scare you to death?", that scares me to death. The Daleks always bring out the Darth Doctor in him, and I adored him going all dark side in Dalek. More of the same, please!
So, all in all, good fun. I sort of can't wait for next week, but it's the last one! Urgh.
I watched Doctor Who Confidential with the vague idea that I might be in it. But while I did notice a clip of Collectormania, sadly no sign of me or any other resident lunatics. Ah, well.
And now, I retreat.
hathy_col and I are working on a Super Seekrit Project O'Doom...

on 2005-06-11 08:56 pm (UTC)Also, I love love love Jack. His game show bit, and producing the gun (I really don't want to think aobut that in too much detail), his scanning toys (How does he know that the Doctor has two hearts, hmm?), and when he goes psycho after Rose is 'disintegrated'.

on 2005-06-12 01:46 am (UTC)The controller got to me too. She had a kind of Shakespearean vibe, like Ariel, the way she kept saying "My Masters..."

on 2005-06-12 10:34 am (UTC)Either he knows something about Time Lord physiology anyway, or he's learnt... experimentally. And the OT3 vibe between all three of them was so beautifully played. Jack goes psycho, the Doctor withdraws, and then you can see that while Jack is busy going psycho he's still doing his best to protect the Doctor... *wibble*

on 2005-06-12 10:39 am (UTC)Aww, yes, nekkid!Jack! Rating figures going up all over the place.
I noticed your comments on the music earlier, but I wouldn't have noticed because I watch everything with subtitles, remember? So even if it was too loud it probably wouldn't have registered with me.
