Departures

I have deleted the previous post of ANGST and DOOM because, well, I went to work and it wasn't that bad. It wasn't bad at all, actually; it's a beautiful sunny day and people are coming into the shop and not lingering as they do in the colder months. There were no irate customers, no people running in demanding to see Tony or "someone in charge", no one whom I accidentally bled on or anything tragic like that. Just families, people buying interesting books, and one adorably polite small boy who made some solemn inquiries about the Revenge of the Sith novelisation and promised to come back next week to buy it.

The sun was shining, the people were nice, and there was a note from Tony that went as follows: "Iona? HARRY POTTER! refreshments?"

Apparently he wants to feed biscuits and cocoa to everyone who comes in at midnight for Half-Blood Prince. I scribbled down my agreement, as his latest efficiency drive is making the bookshop a democracy. Every paragraph of his notes has questions upon which we are to say yea or nay. Like everyone else, I'm fond of Tony simply because he thinks of things like this. Actually, changes are afoot. We're going to have a bit of a send-off this summer, as Steph, John, Tony and I are all leaving at once, mass exodus that will make life rather different for those left behind.

That said, Paddy was in a few days ago - Paddy, who worked in the shop when I was first living here - buying some books for a course he's on, and he said solemnly, "You will never be free of this place. You may leave it, but it won't leave you."

"There are advantages to that, though," I said (I was calculating his discount at the time).

I threw the books in the bag and he winked at me. "Quite."

Later, the delivery man came in bearing lipgloss, which he handed to each of us (Gary and John adopted sudden expressions of spontaneous masculinity). "Free for all of you," he said happily; apparently one of the new kids' books is being promoted with it. It's vanilla and quite nice. And also, this morning's screw-up over the rota was not my fault and I am not being blamed for it. Good to know.

Next week, Tony's in, there's a book-signing and John will hopefully be sunning himself on the Champs-Elysées. My last day at work will be September 17th, and I'm going to be sorry to go.

So I am in a much better mood now, although one thing I did forget to do was actually buy books. I want to buy The Clockwise Man (Ninth Doctor tie-in, apparently quite good, and Colleen can borrow it if she wants) and The Time-Traveller's Wife, because I've heard good things about it. I went to the library, and their waiting list has something ridiculous like thirty people on it. So finding myself £6.99 seems the only option, plus discount.

Talking of which, I actually got up this morning and watched the old-school Doctor Who. It might be because I'm now used to the forty-five minute format, but I always feel nothing very much happens in the middle of the old stories. The action picks up again towards the end. That said, this featured, among other things, the Black Guardian, a plot for Turlough to kill the Doctor, a wolf-headed creature under electronic control, a pandemic of disease (Lezzer's disease? wha-huh?), use of radiation, the creation and the destruction of the universe and Nyssa's departure, all in one episode.

I love this show. And actually, much as I didn't want to, I love Five. He's so cute, what with the fuzzy-headed vulnerability and the celery (Pedar asked, "Why is he wearing a cricket jumper?" and I honestly couldn't answer) and you want to just pat him on the head and tell him everything's gonna be fine. Awww.

Bad Wolf tonight! I'm very much looking forward to it. Finally, mystery solved!

Edited to add: A word of advice to all you people who are not me. If you are right-handed and have an iPod, do not slice through your thumb and index finger with a razor.

It's Lazar's disease. (And lazar - old synonym for "leper," IIRC.)

Having said that, yes, the end of Terminus is a bit... jam-packed with weird. Although I love it, because I love Turlough.... And Five was always my favorite Doctor.

Aw. I envy you your bookstore. I wish I worked in a place like that.

If you are right-handed and have an iPod, do not slice through your thumb and index finger with a razor.

Does this mean us lefties are free to slice ourselves up? Should we also be running with scissors? *grins*

*points at your icon* So cute!

Yes... very much of the weird. The episode after was on this morning, but I couldn't face getting up at six thirty two days running. :)

*g* I'm still amazed I'm working here and not for minimum wage in a supermarket somewhere.

You lefties have the advantage of being able to use a click-wheel both ways! When I do it with my left hand, it all goes wrong, and the somewhat ravaged state of my right hand means I can't use it either. It's a sad situation, really.

And don't run with scissors. :)
