raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (h2g2 - towel)

I thought my parents would object to my going out tonight, so the plan was to inform them of it five minutes before actually going out. Surprisingly they were very much okay with it. So I went out to meet [livejournal.com profile] quackaquacka and [livejournal.com profile] eternalwings in Southport, and on the way it began to rain.

Luckily, I had a towel.

Hitch-Hiker's movie, yay! I've been waiting for this for years. Seven of them, to be precise; I heard the radio series when I was in first year and have been a fangirl ever since. This was very, very different to what I expected. I kind of expected a rehash of the arc of the first radio series - Earth destroyed, Ford&Arthur on Vogon ship, poetry, Heart of Gold, Magrathea, Slartibartfast, Deep Thought, 42, mice, restaurant at the end of the universe, Golgafrincham Ark B, prehistoric earth, Scrabble.

But this had all sorts of different stuff going on, and it was confusing. Probably would have been more so if you weren't familiar with the original version. (And I'm perfectly aware there is no real "original.")

That said, stuff I liked:

-Arthur. I had never heard of Martin Freeman, but he is Arthur; hapless and desperate and British, condemned to this crazy life in his dressing gown, and ohmygod yay for Arthur. I need an icon.

-Stephen Fry. 'Nuff said.

-the Marvin cameo! I absolutely adored that.

-I never noticed the Vogon guards have the same catchphrase as the Daleks! Intentional, or not? Seems more likely to be than not, if that makes sense.

-the improbable conversion of Our Heroes into knitting. Love, love, love.

-Having "ideas" on Vogsphere. Love!

-"I think I'm a sofa."

"I know the feeling."

And the slash! I'd never seen Hitch-Hiker's slash before, but oh, so much love for Ford and Arthur. The best was the delightfully blatant bit where Ford hangs onto a half-demented Arthur and clings as the earth is destroyed around them. Aaah. Very much craving Ford/Arthur right now.

Stuff I didn't like:

-Zaphod. Entirely left me cold, I don't know why.

I didn't much like Zaphod either really, I always pictured him having two separtate heads, rather than just the one under the chin thing.

For some reason, I pictured the large construction room where Slartibartfast shows Arthur the second world to be a huge expanse of whiteness. I realise this is a strange thing to point out, but in that part of the film I couldn't help but feel defeated.

& I loved the knitted heart of gold and occupants.

The storyline made me confused though.

Surprisingly, the person in our party who had never read/seen/heard anything to do with the Hitchhiker's Guide was the one who enjoyed it the most.

Marvin!!

Also, Zaphod didn't do anything for me.
