The Doctor
Mar. 26th, 2005 07:54 pmDoctor Who? Naff, naff, naff. But strangely, lovably compelling, and I finally realised why it has such a timeless (heh) appeal. Star Trek? Never going to happen. American glossy sci-fi is generally alien in more ways than one. But Doctor Who is different. If you walked round the corner on the way to school and met the Tardis, you wouldn't be surprised. It would be only natural.
Other than that, I've had a vaguely silly day. I got my hair cut and have been wriggling all day because I feel like I have hair down my neck. It's exactly the same length, with the layers put back in and feels a lot better but doesn't look any different. I guess you can't have everything.
And five hours at work made my head hurt. There weren't many customers today, and while I had a brief moment of amusment because I couldn't find a Where's Wally book, it wasn't that interesting. I did manage to buy a couple of books for the flight - Tipping The Velvet, because I've always meant to read it (and it's the BBC edition with the terribly suggestive cover), and Looking For La Bomba, the story of a British journalist who goes to Cuba to join a band despite having no musical talent whatsover. It bothers me slightly that I get paid twenty quid for five hours, and the books cost me fifteen quid! Admittedly, eleven-fifty with discount, but still.
Talking of which, I went rummaging in my bedside table drawer with the vague idea I might have some American dollars in there. I did. But not ten or twenty dollars, as previously supposed. I have a hundred and twenty American dollars and I have no idea where they came from. Presumably they're from the last time I was over there, which was about eighteen months ago - I think! - and are worth a lot less now than they were then. Oh, well. Sixty pounds is not to be sneezed at. I could buy shoes.
In other news, the remix anonymity has been lifted. Oleander Silence (the Ghosts That Haunt Remix) was the remix of A Sequence of Ghosts, and it was apparently written by
angelgazing. She rocks.
And, and, and, I wrote Come Undone (the Two Kingdoms Remix), a remix of Old Enough by
amchau. I have been trying to keep this a secret for months, and I'm glad that she didn't guess. For the record, Am-Chau - I never once lied to you. I told you I'd heard of my remix author, that she was a Buffy fan and a Stargate fan, that she'd written Spuffy and HP fic, and I even told you the remix I'd written was a Stargate fic. Reading the story, to me it sounds like me, if that makes sense, so I'm doubly surprised that you didn't guess, even after I carefully avoided the subject and pointedly didn't ask you to beta!
Sigh. I have a headache. I'm going to watch 33 again, which probably won't help the headache, and start copying BSG for
gamesiplay.

on 2005-03-27 10:00 pm (UTC)I was contemplating buying them as they were all paperback & I have the hardback of Fingersmith & my Tipping the Velvet hasn't been in my possession for ages as I've lent it out & probably won't get it back for ages. However, I've read Affinity & it just isn't in the same league as the other two, no actual lesbian sex. Though, on thinking about it, I might go back & buy them, three for two & all that.

on 2005-03-26 11:43 pm (UTC)Actually, you are my hero for other reasons, too, including but not limited to "Come Undone." I just went over and read it, and it's gorgeous. This bit--
...and Daniel is himself now but also all the versions of himself he has ever been, and he is Ancient, ascended, foster child, neglected, archaeologist, respected and Daniel Jackson, (loved, loved, loved), himself over and over again.
--sort of made me catch my breath. You scare me, in a good, good way. :)

Am v. peeved that I don't get to meet you, by the way! Clearly it is the action of a malevolent universe.
