Stargate - Moebius

raven“That was good,” I said, walking into Pedar’s study. “So good. I’ll go and write an incoherent review of it and bore you with it later.”
He can’t have been listening; he said, “Okay, princess,” and waved me out.
The fact remains – it was damn good. I only hope the second part is nearly as fantastic. Sigh. Specifically, then, this is what I liked.
-The opening sequence was fun. I love everyday-life-at-the-SGC, Daniel and Sam chatting, Jack getting harassed by scientists, just general coolness.
-Catherine’s death shocked me. Yes, she hasn’t been mentioned for a while, but kill her off the episode after they kill Jacob? I did like Daniel saying he’d seen her the week before, but not kosher, methinks. And where the hell was Ernest at the funeral?
-Also, Catherine has a niece? Wasn’t she an only child? Anyway, interesting way to pull the plot – were she and Daniel flirting, I wonder? It was good to see the udjat pendant again, as well. A nice piece of continuity over eight years. If and when this gets resolved, it would be fun to see Daniel wearing the pendant the way he did before.
-Jack asking, “Have you ordered anything online lately?” Such lovely friendship vibes between them. And Daniel’s expression on seeing his study absolutely full of boxes!
-Jack getting harassed by the scientists, again. The guy with the red hair – wasn’t he the one we saw in Heroes? I loved him and it was great to see him again.
-Daniel interrupting. And the incredibly slashy dance that follows – “You must interrupt, Daniel, you must!” – and the grabbing and skipping out of chairs. Wonderful.
-Someone fill me in on this timeship thing, please. Did I miss a huge chunk of canon? I think I did. Where did it come from? And why would be helpful to open a wormhole to the Pegasus galaxy? For communications, I assume; surely the Atlantis crew can’t step backwards through it.
-SG-1 in Egypt. Loved every second of it – the robes, the language, the Goa’uld imagery we haven’t seen in a while, complete with Horus guards. Teal’c putting the headdress on was fantastic – the sequence of movements it makes to come together amuse me no end.
-The ease with which they get the ZPM! One mission where they don’t get shot at!
-The discovery of the ship was clever. I don’t know if anyone else knows what I’m talking about, but there used to be a kids’ show on in the afternoons called Aquila. It was about two boys who discovered an alien ship buried on an archaeological site dating to Roman times. It wasn’t very big – just held the two of them – and was thousands of years old and unbelievably cool and all that. Anyway, it could be made invisible, and got discovered once because they left it out in the rain and the water dripped off it.
Actually, that has a lot of similarities to Stargate in general. Anyway, moving on.
-I can’t have been the only one who thought Jack would win the argument, they’d jump the Jaffa and get the ship back. The four of them walking into the distance in robes with long shadows was different and original.
-And then, jump. Geek!Daniel (and no, the hair doesn’t do it for me this time – guess it has to be natural for me to like it as much as I did) teaching English. I got the scenario instantly. -Alternate reality Paul has a moustache! I die.
-Now we come to one of the few flaws, at least in my opinion – Sam. Yes, we know Daniel was a lot of a geek back then. But Sam? The other AU civilian!Sam versions have been far less geeky, although they did share some of her dress sense. I don’t know, I just don’t think Sam would have been quite as much of a social maladjust as they’re painting her.
-Jack has been retired since Charlie’s death? Eight years on the boat. And he named it Homer. Nice touch.
-The moment the video camera appeared, I started squeeing from the brilliance. Sam and Daniel, in robes, on screen – perfect in many ways. Their explanations are needed for the plot, of course, but I did like the way we see so much of their interpersonal relationships. Sam and Daniel are friends, good friends, affectionate and calling each other by their first names and finishing each other’s sentences. Jack is snarky, funny, but feels he ought to do what they ask. “There are no fish in my pond!” *snerk*
-The whole bit where they go to see Jack – I don’t know why that seemed off to me. Why did they assume Jack would be on their side, anyway? His assuming they were a couple did amuse, however.
-Daniel and Sam immediately bonding also rang true. I loved all the references to Children of the Gods throughout – Daniel’s eulogy, wryly wondering what would have happened if Catherine had never met him, Sam’s brilliant “reproductive organs on the inside!” line, and in the same way as they did in CotG, Daniel and Sam gel. They make a nice pair.
-Rodney! I bounced a bit when I saw him, and again, immediately thought PegB. Good to know he’s his usual abrasive self, and Sam rejects him just as quickly as she did the first time, in favour of Daniel! Yay. Also yay – in this universe, Rodney isn’t allergic to lemon chicken! Good continuity, subverted or otherwise.
-They found the Stargate, the same way they found it in Solitudes. Of course, we knew they would. And we all saw it coming but still feel their disappointment as they stand there, watching the gate being lowered down into place.
In conclusion, I cannot wait for the next part. I made a Moebius band for Pedar to make my point. He merely looked bemused.

on 2005-02-16 08:35 am (UTC)I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get more explaination of how the universes had changed-- why different, and yet so similar? If you make a small change 5000 years ago, it seems to me that at every turn the world is likely to get *less* like the one you know, so that a change further back results in more difference from the world you know, so that over that time scale it's not unreasonable to expect it to be nearly unrecognisable.
But, anyway. What are you doing this evening? I'm out all day, but I'll be in and bored from about 6:30, so if you want to call, that's cool. *hint, hint* Or do the IM thing, or whatever.

on 2005-02-16 10:52 am (UTC)I'm assuming the second part will show us more of where the changes crept in. But the differences are too all-encompassing to think about. The AU is a world where the Goa'uld have never heard of Earth, where the entire SGC never came to be, where Jacob died of cancer and Sha're never met Daniel and Teal'c is presumably still First Prime to Apophis. It makes my brain hurt.
I'm working this afternoon, but I won't be back too late. I'll give you a call when I can.

And I don't know if you've seen the Atlatnis finale yet, but I'm watching it as I type and, well, "Rodney in spaaaaace!" is all I have to say. Hehe.
