raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (willow/tara)

Two bits of good news for me today. Firstly, I got an offer from York, conditional, AAB. I am surprised, as I haven't had a single communication from them since I sent off my UCAS form. There are people sending off their UCAS forms now. Well, not now, but two days ago, and this boggles my mind. I couldn't do it even if I didn't have an early deadline.

Secondly, I have a job. It is the one I have been applying for and not getting for years (and it gives me a certain perverse satisfaction that I'm three days short of eighteen and they have to pay me £4.10/hour) and it's actually just about perfect. I have no objection at all to working in a bookshop, especially as it's in mufti, with people I have known for years, with swappable shifts and suchlike. I won't earn very much at all, but I hardly mind that. It's the principle of the thing.

In other news, I am overtired and vaguely despondent about my exams. I famously don't stress about exams - I revise and panic well in advance and don't worry about them on the day - but it won't be like that this time. I don't want to fail. I don't want to fail. And I'm not getting any better. Chemistry - not something I can do. Biology, even worse. I hate this, for the record. It's definitely going to kill me.

Blah. On the other hand, my parents are remembering my birthday. I'm impressed amd touched, and really kind of looking forward to it; Miranda and Colleen have threatened cakes and I love them both for it. I do like cake. Who doesn't? Besides Shrek, that is.

Anyway. I shall leave you with some fandom observations. Firstly, I finally dared watch I've Got You Under My Skin last night, and loved the twist. Also, Wesley was abused as a child? That explains so much it's amazing. When he was on Buffy, the word to describe him was "insecure"; now, he seems better (now he's realised he doesn't have to measure his entire self-worth by what the Watchers' Council think of him) but still somewhat worshipful of Angel. He's growing up, it seems - and yes, I get the woobie!Wesley love. I do. I have about five more episodes to watch of season one. It's all good.

And finally - I was thinking about this while not being able to sleep last night - what does Joss Whedon have against parents, and fathers in particular? Buffy's father walked out. Xander's father is an alcoholic. Willow's parents scarcely notice her. Giles's father forced him into becoming a Watcher clearly against his will. Tara was frightened to death of her father. Cordelia's father seems singularly unconcerned about a penniless eighteen-year-old girl alone in a big city. Angel stole from his father. Wesley's father locked him up for hours. Spike, Robin and Doyle never even met their fathers.

Huh. Revision time.

Congratulations on the job! A bookshop sounds perfect for you.

You have a point. The only really good parent on the show is Joyce, and she ends up dying, if I'm not mistaken. I recently saw the almost-all-dream-ep about the First Slayer, and I found the scene between Xander and his father (not to mention Xander's fear of the basement stairs) to be very real and disturbing.

Food for thought, indeed.

Good luck on revisions! (I should really get to studying, myself...)

Yes, Joyce dies. *sigh* So sad. And Xander's father is very very scary - and poor Xander is afraid of turning into him, and poor boy is so messed up because of it.

I do wonder if the ideal parental relationship we're shown is between Buffy and Giles. Their scenes together are some of my absolute favourites, and it's so clear how much they love each other from very early on.

But biological parents? Not big in the Jossverse.

*pokes you*

You still haven't told me what kind of cake you want. You just said that you're allergic to paracetamol, and I wasn't really planning on using that.

So. Tell me.

Really, anything! Maybe not chocolate, maybe something with banana in it, what do you like? *g*

Well done on getting the job! I knew you'd get one eventually, although you won't need it when you go to Uni. Working in a bookstore is great - but be warned. Paper cuts are evil buggers. They attack you when you least expect it!
