raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (children of the gods)

Initial response? Like, whoa.

Juvenile, but sums up most of what I want to say about it. I have to admit I didn't expect to like it, and it had a couple of bits which were rather "huh?", but overall, it was fab and I think I'll watch it again tomorrow when they repeat it. Which is probably the highest recommendation I can give a show, so yeah.

The beginning bit, I loved. I like all the Abydos-related episodes, and this is, I believe, the first time we've seen Skaara since the removal of Klorel. Anyway, I loved his reaction to Daniel's appearance. Actually, I loved Daniel's appearance. I have a thing about the Abydonian robes. I can't help but wonder - Skaara did know Daniel was dead, right? Surely someone thought to tell him, seeing as he is Daniel's brother-in-law?

Moving on, Jack in the lift. My enjoyment of that scene was somewhat mitigated by the fact if I'd been stuck in a lift like Jack was, I would quite literally be screaming. I hate lifts. I'm terrified of them. But it was not me stuck in the lift. Jack's response to Daniel's sudden appearance is great. The dialogue - "...never calls, never writes..." - struck just the right note, of disbelief mixed with a thousand other things.

The other thing I liked was his assumption that the rest of the team would think him crazy (just me, or an echo of Legacy?). Anyway - it's perfectly true that the other cameos Daniel has made have been when the relevant team member has been in a state of delirium/disembodiement/whatever. In a lift at the SGC is a whole different thing.

And so, Abydos. The same planet, the same setting as Children of the Gods. I just like it. Jonas definitely didn't fit into this episode at all. Not that I don't like him (I do!), but it's true he just got marginalised. Jack striding through, yelling for Daniel, was a little not-nice to Jonas, but I liked it for the sheer slash potential. There was a nice moment between Jonas and Daniel when he did appear - "Is that my stuff?" In fact, I probably just liked Daniel in this episode. He's obviously no longer the same person he was - before, the helpless liberal island in a military installation and and now so effortlessly, awe-inspiringly powerful - but he's fundamentally the same character. Someone has really paid attention and made sure of it. He's still idealistic, vaguely clueless, and so ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of helping people. I liked it. And he's still threatening Goa'ulds, although it's not quite the same when he's clearly got the power to wipe them from the face of the universe.

Anubis - oh, yeah. Bad guy. Much creepier than Apophis and his ilk. The end bit, where Daniel throws the balls of light at him - waah. Too cool. I may just find a screencap and make it into my desktop wallpaper. In fact, there is only one major thing I didn't like about this episode, and that was the stone tablet. Why the hell would there be a stone tablet about the Ancients in Ra's pyramid chamber? The Stargate cartouche was also on Abydos - how many priceless relics can one planet hold? If Daniel had just known (and told them) he was an Ancient, it would have been much more plausible. I won't even mention the Lost City; I've never liked that plotline at all.

The end bit, the destruction and mysterious recreation of Abydos, was really nice - creepy, mysterious and atmospheric. The bit with Skaara really did give a sense of things coming "full circle."

I was a little bit peeved that there was no real explanation of what happened to Daniel. Of course I know what will happen to him - Fallen and Homecoming are tomorrow and Thursday) but while it's good, it's okay, it's not really the way I would have liked it. Better to have kept Jonas and have Daniel continue to make the odd appearance, possibly more often than he did in this season.

Or, with a little tweaking, this really could have worked as the last episode ever.

Anyway. I will probably watch it again if I can.
