raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (bad hair day [crystaldesire])

I just watched it for the umpteenth time. Waaah. Despite all the fandom_wank that is related to this episode, I maintain that it remains an hour of damn good television. It has everything - angst, humour, plot, fabulous new character (Jonas! Squee!) and in the end, a perfect way of giving Daniel a death-without-death.

I am aware of the existence of Fallen, Homecoming and the rest of season 7, but have chosen to ignore them. Meridian ought to stand alone. Ironically, I think it may be one of the last episodes that really could stand alone if it wanted. It builds beautifully on what came before (the ascended, Oma Desala, etc) but you really don't need all of that.

Moving on, I'd never seen this episode without seeing Jonas as "new" before. Have I ever said how much I love Jonas? I love Jonas. I particularly like the way he could well be a random alien (tm) here, but the little things ("Quick study") that will eventually develop him into a fully-fledged, banana-toting Weather-Channel-watching main character are already there. And of course he and Daniel "got on." Is it wrong that I have the urge to slash those two?

Talking slash, one of Jack's lines, addressed to Jonas, is: "I only agreed to bring the letter so I could see you." Taken out of context, that is... hee. Not that I'd ever slash those two; there's nothing there. Yeah, moving on, again.

Daniel's "death" is very well dealt with in terms of the fact he never once steps out of character. The sardonic assessment of his own situation near the beginning - "If I don't drown in my own fluids first, I will bleed to death and there is no medical treatment that will prevent that" - makes me want to laugh, cry and glomp him, and echoes certain aspects of earlier episodes like Need and particularly Legacy - "Sorry for being such a head-case." So does his decision that his entire life "has been a failure." It's so not true but so characteristic of him to say it.

Sam, Jack, and Teal'c, each with their own, again perfectly in-character way of saying goodbye also want me to glomp them all, but particularly Jack, with his maybe sort of perhaps way of saying it. And Janet! There are no words for how much I liked the way she hinted at euthanasia. What a position to be in.

To finish off, the best thing in the entire episode is the line: "Do our thing, glow me." But it was all fantastic. And I love Jonas, and tomorrow is Revelations and I love that one just as much.
