One of the things I have always liked about Stargate is its refusal to glorify the human race. I suppose a lot of this comes from its chosen time and place setting - here and now. Obviously, the human race as we know it is nowhere near perfect. Equally, neither are the alien races in the show; the Tollan, despite their extraodinary technology, have made serious mistakes and undertaken postively Faustian deals; the Tok'ra, despite their purported differences from the Goa'uld, are arrogant and exclusive; and even the Asgard, with all their wide-eyed benevolence, are suffering from genetic mutation and replicators. It's clear that in that list, it's the Asgard with the highest degree of morality. The human race - not even close. Shows like the Star Trek series are set far enough in the future for there to be such a thing as a Federation with its Prime Directive, while Stargate is made up of people that are somehow more real; they make real, human decisions and mistakes.

Inaugaration did a lot for this idea. The politics and intrigues are so very human, so characteristic of how people would behave when faced with an extraordinary alien device twenty-eight levels beneath Cheyenne Mountain. It was interesting, much more interesting than these "clips" episodes usually are. I have to admit to a sneaking fondness for clips episodes - I liked Politics, and Out of Mind wasn't too awful - but this one didn't make as much sense to me as it could have because of all the season six episodes I haven't seen. Which was the episode where Thor beams down and threatens Kinsey? And corrects him with "Supreme Commander?" I love Thor. Every time he's on screen I have this urge to give him a hug. The fact he has Michael Shanks' voice makes the whole concept even more surreal, especially when it's Daniel talking to him.

Where was I? Yes, this episode was very realistic, and so better than it might have been otherwise. It's interesting that SG-1 don't appear at all; most likely a first, unless you include There But For The Grace of God and Tin Man. Talking of disappeating team members, no mention of Jonas? Despite the fact I'm a Daniel fan, I do like Jonas and his omission annoyed me. They had quibbles about Teal'c, they had quibbles about Daniel, Jack and Sam, why not: "Oh, by the way, there was another alien on the team for a while, but he ate too many bananas and besides his planet keeps throwing nuclear bombs at itself." While I'm at it, I was giggling away at the description of the various "alien influences" SG-1 have come under - yet another reminder how little this show takes itself seriously. When did Daniel play host to "not one, but twelve alien psyches simultaneously?" I'm guessing it's in one of the episodes I still haven't seen.

Also, when did it become canon (as opposed to fanon) that the Ancients and the ascended beings of which Oma Desala is one (and Daniel was temporarily) are one and the same? I always thought that would turn out to be the case, and I was right, but when did I become right? I think I would have liked Jonas to stay on SG-1 and Daniel to remain ascended, but to play more of a part than he was playing. He made a nice, blinky-eyed ascended being.

So, in all a good one. It amused me that it must have taken place on my birthday - the American president is inaugarated on January 20th.

Next week is the season finale. Yay.

Oh, and for the record, if anyone's wondering when I will stop it with these reviews, not for a while. I still have to see ten season 6 episodes and nine season 7 ones. Not counting The Lost City. Hee.

It was in Full Circle. Daniel discovered it when he read a stone tablet.
