raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (sam and her thoughts)

I went to Becca's garden party this afternoon. I actually didn't wear my ratty baggies and wore a skirt instead. I know, weirdness. So, yes. I arrived at about half three, thinking I was late, then within minutes Lucinda, Enid and Emma arrived, and we showed Enid Becca's room (yes, it's still very purple) and retreated into the garden with a few glasses of a strange cocktail we tried out. It consisted in not-equal parts of orange schnapps, orange juice, Malibu and cranberry juice. Becca said in advance that anything in which you put Malibu tastes like nothing but Malibu, and she was right, but I still drank two glasses of the stuff followed by some white wine (and the first rule of jet-lag is don't drink, but what the hell).

We sat out in the summer sun, pleasantly cool as it didn't get uncomfortably hot today, and talked. And talked and talked. I don't know exactly what we talked about, but some examples were who's leaving and who's staying, reasons for Megan's apparent spinelessness, Eric Clapton, how Enid and Emma walked out of the Sugababes concert, how Becca dropped her salmon, Lucinda's weird night, Katrina's not-boyfriend Greg, and so on and so forth. I also seem to remember our touching on the subjects of politics, and how we get to vote in the next election, and I think I explained to Enid the various elements of the political spectrum, and what else?
Yes... Emma mentioned the extreme prettiness of Johnny Depp in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, which led to talk of Leonardo DiCaprio and how Becca and Emma wore out the tape in that particular place in Titanic where he drops the cigarette and then flicks his hair. I remember them rewinding that bit over and over again, just so they could keep on watching, but they were eleven at the time, they had an excuse.

Talking of Leonardo DiCaprio made me think of that other film he was in, Total Eclipse with David Thewlis, the film which I described as "the one with the bisexual French poets" and predictably only Emma knew what I was talking about. She knew which one I meant, and we had one of those lovely shrieked conversations I'm going to miss so much when she leaves:
"French poets! What were they called?"
"Verlaine and Rimbaud!"
"Who was the other guy?"
I have to admit I enjoyed imparting this piece of information. "He's going to be in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. As Lupin."
"Oh my god! Bisexual French poet?! Lupin?!"
"Lupin is gay?" - that was Becca, sounding startled. I meant to say, "In absence of any evidence to the contrary," but it came out as "No... but yeah."
And we shrieked some more.

The gingerbread cake and strawberries and cream broke into this part of the conversation, as did the rain. We ran out to rescue everything, and the moment everyone was inside with all the food and paraphenalia, it stopped raining and the sun came out. Consequently, everyone else went back outside. Lots of fun was had all round, methinks. I have no idea where five hours went, but I was very aware of the fact that I wasn't at an Indian gathering. I was somewhere where I'd like the food, speak the language, love the people, and be safe in the knowledge that I'd been invited for me, because they wanted me to be there and not because anyone was trying to be polite or be respectful to my family.

So I'm in a good mood. I had a lovely afternoon.

That comment about Lupin being gay made me giggle out loud. Now I have to go rent that movie. ;)

Yep, that's me. I had my face painted at the zoo when I was there a few weeks ago with Nicholas.
