Angel the series
Dec. 4th, 2004 11:24 pmI have now watched the first five episodes of Angel, and have surprised myself by liking several distinct things about it. The made-much-of darker tone (compared to Buffy, that is) is both effective and appropriate, but I like it best as a backdrop to the necessarily blacker humour. Take for example Oz's reaction to Angel in daylight. "You’re...incredibly pale." A beat, and then: "He’s very pale. Paler than most people." Funny because it's very, very true.
Let's see, what else do I like? That the darker tone translates to literally darker when it comes to how the show is shot. Angel with Batman-esque cape is cheesy but he fits in with the darkness; even Doyle and Cordelia never seem to make it into daylight very much. Sunnydale seems a very nice place compared to Angel's Los Angeles, although the references to Sunnydale and events there are cute - I particularly liked Cordelia yelling, "I'm from Sunnydale! We had our own Hellmouth! You can't scare me!" The setting of the show really works, and sadly I will never get tired of the "city of" pun.
Another thing that is unexpectedly appealing is the Angel theme and title sequence. It is, for lack of a better word, cool; atmospheric and melancholy and has all those Angel Batman shots without descending into cheesiness. I kept on recognising one shot in particular, of a girl turning her head into the camera, thinking I recognised it, and tonight when talking to
amchau I asked if it was the girl from the Buffy episode Anne, whose name is first Chantelle and then Lily and finally Anne. Am-Chau laughed and seemed impressed I'd noticed.
And, finally, the one thing I like best about this series can be summed up in one word - Doyle. Big green eyes, ridiculously endearing accent, seemingly attracted to both Angel and Cordelia - I think it's safe to say I have a definite thing about him and his wacky past and weirder-than-Anya family history, and oh, yes, spontaneous and highly debilitating visions. Hopefully said thing will be sufficiently distracting over the next few days.
See you all on Wednesday.
