Work experience
Aug. 4th, 2003 01:29 pmWell. First morning of work experience. It's not much like I expected; will update properly later. To start with, they use Apple Macs. I haven't used a computer that didn't run Windows since I was all of six years old, so this has proved a problem. It's like finding something you always thought you were good at and discovering you actually know fuck-all. However, I am learning, and am currently writing the letters for the letters to the editor page, and learning anew what a load of sad people Southport residents really are. People have written letters about the lack of deckchairs on the pier, for crying out loud. I've noticed one woman has entered the same competition five times. It's pathetic. In other news, I actually went out with one of the journalists on a story. It was something to do with the local traders on the bridge over the railway line - apparently the council have closed the bridge for no reason and therefore the traders are losing money. It sounds boring but it was actually quite cool, listening to what they had to say, stepping out the way as they took pictures of them, and listening in to their plans to pick up the cones off the street and stage a protest.
Having got back from that, I had to make some phone calls to verify the details of a story - again, boring, story of a new shop opening in Hesketh Bank - and the man on the other end turned out to be named Pramod Kumar and he was very startled at how well I pronounced his name. It made me giggle. I have to write up the story of his new shop once I get back into the newspaper office. No, I'm not there at the moment - I have no idea how to connect to the internet on an Apple, I'd probably fry the circuits. I went out and bought lunch, which I haven't eaten yet, and came here to the library where I can actually connect to the internet. I only have twenty-five minutes of lunch left. Better go.
Will be back in the evening, of course, and
cucharita - I only just got your email, sorry! I can't really do anything this week - how about next week, if you really want to go bookshopping? Hannah will be back by then too, presumably.
That's all. I'm hungry.
