Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis
Jun. 11th, 2003 03:16 pmToday's exams were Classics Literature and French reading, neither of which I had revised for, natch. When I say not revised, I mean not revised. Didn't look at any French and skimmed the Aeneid at eight o'clock this morning. Boo. However, the exam wasn't bad, or at least I didn't think so. I heard people complaining that they didn't finish, they didn't have enough time, but I didn't really think so. There were four context questions and two essay questions, and while I didn't sit there for ages, I did get them all done without much difficulty. The essay questions were how important are the female characters in the Aeneid and how true to life is the Pot of Gold, and I resisted the urge to write "Very" and "No" and rambled on for a couple of sides each.
So that was all right. So was lunch, as we had plenty of time just to talk and Becca ladled the cream off her chocolate mousse and into my little punnet of strawberries, which was ridiculously decadent.
While I was in the middle of eating it, Miss Gow stopped by to ask how the exam went. She's so cute - when Ella said she ran out of time, she said, "That's a good sign!" and looked honestly surprised when we laughed. In the morning, we were trying to revise Classics, and somehow got distracted, and I made a half-serious suggestion about getting her something, and suddenly everyone took me up on it. I think everyone will donate 75p, which I will take to Pritchard's and buy this, Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis. She'll love it. A couple of years ago she tried to stop me reading under my desk in some Latin lesson or other, and in an attempt to calm her down I told her that the spells in the Harry Potter books are always Latin words. She actually listened to me, and in September told me she'd spent the summer reading all four books. Like I said, she's sweet and deserves an apology because we a)didn't listen, b)didn't revise, and c)didn't care.
The afternoon exam was supposed to start at one as usual, but for some reason which they did not tell us, didn't start until half past. I employed the time in talking to
lilka, and got as giggly as usual, following which we trooped in. Everyone doing French had to sit still for ten minutes listening to the immensely complicated instructions for General Studies A-level, and after a while actually got to my own exam. Which was sadistic. I don't think I've got more than half of it right, but I equally think it wouldn't have been worth revising. Nothing you revise ever actually comes up. Huh. The blessing was of course that it was a short exam, and we got to leave after fifty minutes, being chivvied out by Mr Wilson who was, to quote Helena, being "fucking embetant." I was aggravated.
And everything would have ended there, except on the way home, Becca and I were met by a frantically gesticulating
cucharita. Upon seeing her, the first thing I said was, "Oh, my holy God."
She's got her lip pierced. She told me in the morning she was getting it done soon, but when she said "soon" I didn't think that meant "today." She seems happy, which is a good thing, and the ring is quite cool - silver, of course, to match the one in her tongue.
And that really is everything. I thought about ringing up Tony about that book; probably will in a minute. I'm tired now.
