raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (sam and her thoughts)
[personal profile] raven
What have I achieved today?

I have plane tickets.
I have painted my nails silver.
I have had "Fucking Paki!" shouted at me.
I have been hacked.
I have had [livejournal.com profile] emerald_embers explain the varying merits of mouldy coconut and mouldy salsa.

Okay, I'm bored of doing that now. Back to writing in prose form as opposed to the list. I actually revised today. Did a few chapters of chemistry, and actually feel like I've learned a few things. It all went surprisingly smoothly, and I'm pleased. Following on from chemistry, someone requested that I explain electrolysis half equations, which I shall now do.

I can only explain it with an example. If we take sodium chloride, that is, NaCl, and melt it, so its ions are free to move around, we can then decompose it by electrolysis. Na ²+ ions are positive and will be attracted to the negative electrode, the cathode, and the Cl ²- ions are negative and will be attracted to the positive electrode, the anode.
Now for what happens at each electrode. At the negative electrode, the sodium ions gain electrons to beome electrically neutral sodium atoms, like so:

Na²+ + 2e- --> Na

This equation is supposed to show only one half of the reaction, and if you remember that metal ions always end up at the negative electrode, then it's easy to see that the non-metal ions, in this case, chloride ions, go to the anode, where they become neutral chlorine atoms, like so:

Cl ²- - 2e- --> Cl 2 (supposed to be a little 2, couldn't find on character map)

And this one shows the other half of the equation. I probably haven't been very clear, so please comment to tell me I'm incomprehensible.

I went out to the village with Pedar just now, and the weather's lovely. We only went for a short while - Pedar's had a long day and had to do a multitude of Caesarean sections, or so he said - but we did drop into Pritchard's for a few minutes, and found out Tony is still absolutely set on the idea of opening at midnight to sell the new Harry Potter. He showed me the first Harry Potter book, translated into Latin. I found it utterly hilarious. It begins "Dominus et Domina Dursley, qui vivebant..." but I can't remember any more. He's only got the one copy so far, but has had to order more because of unexpected demand. That, I think, says a lot about the kind of village Formby is.

So that is all, and back to Chemistry, I think.
