A few days ago, I lost my Bod card somewhere in the Social Science Library. After a brief moment of panic, I reasoned that I had to have lost it recently otherwise I wouldn't have got into the library, so I faffed about looking for it for a bit and finally presented myself to the desk to ask if anyone had handed it in. Right behind me, another girl sheepishly made the same enquiry, and I started feeling like less of an idiot for losing it in the five minutes between the entrance gate and the bookshelves.
The woman behind the desk said, "What, today?" and got a box out from under the counter with a stack about six centimetres high. Apparently people lose the things a lot. Mine was not there, and neither was the other girl's, but someone picked hers up just as we were standing there and mine turned up five minutes later underneath the priority shelves.
(Speaking of Bod cards, appearances are deceptive and it is actually impossible to put your entire Bod card in your mouth. Yes, even if you turn it sideways. It is, however, perfectly possible, through sheer force of will, to stick it to your head. There may or may not be photographic evidence of
jacinthsong,
wadiekin,
foulds and me all discovering this simultaneously.)
Anyway, where was I? Possibly in response to this display of stellar incompetence, the nice people at the SSL have installed a sign next to the entrance gate to the effect of Please keep your Bod card with you at all times or some such thing. I've walked past the sign quite a few times, but it was only today that I looked at it properly and noticed that the picture underneath depicts the (presumably lost) Bod cards of a man who looks like John Locke, plus Dana Scully, Fox Mulder, and Jean-Luc Picard.
This amuses me, as well as being further proof that librarians and geeks actually are interchangeable. Some of my very favourite people are librarians.
Yes, geekery and eating plastic aside, I'm still here. Mopey, though, and sleeping a lot, and in the last few days, utterly dazed. I can't seem to engage with conversations. Thank you all for your comments on my last post - I did appreciate them, even if I couldn't quite reply. Today I am supposed to be writing an essay on the influence of gender on Indian politics. Isn't that a great title? I thought so - it sort of gets all my interests in one, and besides, it's really damn cool, so I pitched it to my tute partner.
Whose response was, "Actually, would you mind if we did economic liberalisation instead?"
Well. My New Year's resolution - yes, it is May, what of it - is to stop letting people walk all over me, as they generally do, and thus yes, yes I do mind. I mind a whole, huge, ginormous lot. Because, who, who is boring enough to pick economic liberalisation over gender? Who does that? I ask you. And besides, I am not an economist and am quite proud of that thankyouverymuch.
So I went to the SSL and got books - well, book; I foresee much camping out in the Indian Institute in my future - and bugged
jacinthsong in the study carrels (which are scary), and now I think I need to actually do some work, for the first time today. I have done nothing all day, beyond going to a French class and writing a wee bit for Cherwell.(Actually, if I should ever complain again that I don't do anything, kindly remind me that I'm Triarch of Cerberus, features contributor and occasional reviewer to Cherwell, an AIESEC student nominee, web designer (and now art designer) for Tiptop, and I'm in one of this term's OULES plays. And, er, I spend all my time on the internet, try to learn another language and I'm supposedly reading for a degree. No wonder I can't get out of bed in the morning.
Babble babble. I foresee chocolate mousse in my future, as well.
Also! Have acquired lovely batch of India-themed icons. Have been thinking about India a lot, lately.
