Waitressing

raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (death)
I went to work today.

Five hours of being a waitress at Lady Green. I have never worked so hard for so long without once engaging my brain. The job is simple - clean tables, pick up plates, carry food out to people, wash up. And I, a person with legendary shaking hands, managed not to drop anything. Which was good. I can't really describe what it was like, because I couldn't let my mind wander at all while I was doing it for fear of dropping things. I do remember that I was very bored, and me in a pinny is a sight for sore eyes. Especially when said pinny is maroon. At least it matched the Doc Martens. Yes, to add a touch of the surreal, I waitressed in my biggest, clompiest boots, and managed not to trip over anything.

The people were quite nice. The Woman In Charge is called Suzanne, and she's generally well-disposed to everyone but very brisk and efficient, which scared me slightly. But I think I'd get used to her with time. The other waitresses are all girls and all students - some sixth form, some university - and I liked them all to varying degrees. My favourite was a uni student whose name I never discovered; she was Scouse and voluble and a dab hand at making sandwiches, which I then carried out to the tables. The others were all right - there was only one whom I definitely didn't like - and while I won't ever fit in, it won't be too bad.

The customers are a different story. None of them tip, for one thing. And while most of them aren't too bad, there were one or two total bitches. Customers who gripe over every little thing, and wonder why their waitress wishes they were dead. But thankfully, they were in the minority.

I was glad when it was over. Looks like I'm going back next week, although the money is really bad and my mother is employing socialist rhetoric all over the place. She seems really offended. I am a bit, actually; seventeen fifty isn't much at all for five hours' work, especially as I'm charging eight pounds fifty for one hour's work on Tuesday.

But I've got some money. And that's good. I tried to watch Prophecy when I got back, but it hasn't taped well. Also, I need to do some beta-ing and get poor Remus out of the Forest.

School tomorrow. Sigh.
