The resident lunatics.
Jan. 24th, 2004 12:20 pmSo. The resident lunatics have descended upon us and departed again. I couldn't get in touch with Enid in time and Becca didn't want to come - something about her having gone deaf in one ear - and so in the end, Hannah, Clare, Emily and Colleen arrived. Firstly, Hannah and Clemily, who appeared at about six and proceeded to mock me and my tails. Colleen didn't arrive until later. I rang her to find she was in Altcar - which is a Ministry of Defence site, incidentally - and she said she was on a "country lane", in the dark. A second later, she was shouting, "THE LIGHTS! THE LIGHTS!"
I believe I reacted in the time-honoured fashion. "Are you being abducted by aliens?"
She wasn't. Or if she was, they returned her quickly enough for her to arrive about twenty minutes later. At which point we retired to my room and had what Emily called a "non-existent present giving." Em's present for me is still on order, Hannah is severely pecuniarily challenged at present, and Clare is (probably) splitting with Em, so that left Colleen. I unwrapped to find a (big!) bag of Revels and a very cute Eeyore top. I immediately went gooey. The card had a list of all my favourite things in it. "Lycanthropy, glitter, The Boy Who Lived And His Godfather, Trappers, Patricians..." - you get the picture. There was another card from Em, which had real glitter on it - glitter! - and Hannah had given me a burnt CD with lots of new music, including lots of Starsailor and that song by Ryan Adams; that's the one in which he sings much too high and everyone in the audience starts melting at the edges.
There was a certain logic in seeing if my computer could cope with downloaded Stargate episodes; my friends page are talking about Chimera and I can't be bothered finding out when it's on Sky. Therefore, Em gave me her downloaded version to copy. I did that this morning, so I'm jumping ahead of myself. Last night involved lots of gossip, for some reason; I won't repeat it because Clare will kill me. And Emily, for that matter. I'll stop talking about that now.
My mum came in around then. Said hello, and then abruptly spirited away all my friends and refused to let me follow. I sulked. Then followed when they called. And there was a cake! They had a cake, and they sang, and I blew out the candles. And there were seventeen of them. And we ate the cake. I said "Squee!" a lot. It was a lovely cake, too. Lots of chocolate.
Some time after that, pizza seemed like a good idea. I took the number of the pizza place off the noticeboard and gave it to Hannah to ring. She ordered, they said it would take twenty minutes, we walked down to get it. Colleen (okay, me too) insisted we sing. After the usual songs - Red Dwarf, Time Is Running Out, etc - we began running out of things. There were Guide songs, and The Wheels on the Bus (no, I don't know why) and then, for some reason, the generally nameless little ditty, "Hitler has only got one ball, the other is in the Albert Hall..."
Yes, I know the rest, and no, I will not sing it.
When we got back, we ate the pizza, and later Malteasers - I can say that. I am still the only one who can make them hover in the air. And we were going to watch Red Dwarf - only we never got around to it. We kept on gossiping about all sorts of crap, and listened to a lot of music, and fell asleep about one. Lots of fun, as I keep saying. I don't know how or why the phone post happened. It just happened! And no, we weren't drunk. Not at all. High on life. Hannah's "something profound" is from a Sheryl Crow song, of all places - Run, Baby, Run.
They all departed this morning. Colleen had to leave at nine fifteen. The mind absolutely boggles. She was working at Homebase today from ten. Poor, poor girl! How she does it for three-fifty an hour, I do not know.
Today is going be something of a comedown after all of that, methinks. But before I depart, happy birthday
fragility_lily! Hope it's a good one!
