raven: [hello my name is] and a silhouette image of a raven (me [rouk])
Well. Thursday. It's nice. I like Thursday. Am just about getting the hang of them.

Have revised exactly one quarter of one module. Not bad for an hour's work. Simply cannot be bothered to revise any more. I'm surprised I did anything at all, because there was a certain point where I couldn't be bothered to get up. Finally stumbled out of bed at about midday and avoided my mother. She's on the warpath, as per usual. "Revise!" The other thing she's being vocal about is the bag of sweets on the kitchen island. It's from [livejournal.com profile] language_idling, and I have just about finished it. My mother can't quite believe this, for some reason.

So I revised, and that was that. Have read some of Moving Pictures and The Science of the Discworld, and watched Michael Palin going round the world in eighty days. I love that programme.

And now, to be fair, I did get some Christmas presents. Three, to be precise, one of which is tangible. A lovely drabble from [livejournal.com profile] gamesiplay, an icon from [livejournal.com profile] rouk, and from my mother, a scarf (yes, another one, shush), which is pink and black candy-striped and really rather nice.

That's it, I suppose.

So, Christmas fic. Wasn't written for anyone in particular or for any particular reason - just a way to spend an afternoon. An afternoon where the rest of the world has faded out of existence, I might add. Amazing how the build-up to Christmas is so companionable and exciting, and the day itself is grey and absolutely dead. I don't think a single living person has gone past the house all day.

Fic, yes. I didn't write M*A*S*H, as I didn't want to be depressing, and I didn't write Stargate, because that was my Christmas fic last year, and not Discworld, because then it would be Hogswatch fic, and not Good Omens either, because [livejournal.com profile] louiselux has already written the definitive one.

Which leaves Harry Potter, and what resulted was five hundred words of pure fluff.

Meme

I really, really like this meme, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] gamesiplay.

1. What was the first fandom you read fanfiction in?

Stargate SG-1, in early 2001. It's now nearly 2004 - where did all the time go? Anyway, yes. First fandom. Not the first thing I've been obsessive about, but first time I realised there was such a thing as online fandom.

2. What was the first fandom you wrote fanfiction in?

Stargate, again. I wrote my first fic in September that year, got my first piece of feedback ever from [livejournal.com profile] hathy_col, and the rest is history.

3. What was your original favorite coupling?

I was, and still am, a gen writer. That said, I used to like Daniel/Sha're. I still do, for that matter.

4. What is/are your current favorite coupling(s)?

Right at this moment, Sirius/Remus, but with Hawk/Trapper, Crowley/Aziraphale and Vimes/Vetinari lurking around at the edges. It's all good.

5. What were your original thoughts on yaoi / slash?

[livejournal.com profile] hathy_col, who has already been seen to be a witness to my fandom development, probably remembers my original thoughts on slash. I thought it was the weirdest thing ever. I wasn't homophobic, per se - it probably sounded a lot like it, and everyone who thought so at the time, I'm sorry - but I'd honestly never thought in those terms before. But after a while I got used to the idea, and tolerated it while I carried on writing gen, and then I started to dabble. I maintain that is still all I do.

6. What are your current thoughts on yaoi / slash?

I love it with a passion. It tends to be written by better writers, for one thing, and when it's good, it's very good. As well as that, slash by its very nature has to be nuanced, delicate, subtle; all things I like very much. I still prefer pre-slash, which is basically gen with the subtext run wild - it's all beneath the surface.

7. Which two fanfic authors influenced you the most?

(It was three, but I could only think of two)

[livejournal.com profile] hathy_col, to begin with. Not in any particular way, though - merely by being my age and seven miles from my front door and bearing witness, she made fandom seem normal. That is, she made it seem like the natural thing to do, especially if you look at what my main interests were before fandom.

[livejournal.com profile] gamesiplay, by being the most technically gifted writer I'd ever met, and by also being my age. Another person who made fandom seem normal. I have a very literal style - stuff happens in sequence, blah, blah, but Leigh Does It Differently, and in doing so influences me.

8. Who is your current favorite fanfic author?

I don't know; I don't really read the collected works of authors unless I know them personally. If the question was what is your current favourite fic, that would be easier.

9. Who is your favorite fanfiction author of all time?

Same as before. Besides, I don't really like BNF-ism. The communities that have sprung up lately related to BNF-ism annoy me.

10. Who is your favorite fanfic character of all time?

Ooh, good question. I am terribly tempted to say [livejournal.com profile] minkboylove's Daniel in Dr Jackson's Diary, but I'm not sure. I like so many characters... umm. Well. There's a relatively little-known fic on FA called The Whore's Tale, and its version of Remus Lupin does come to mind.

11. What is the longest fanfic you've completed and how long was it?

The crossover [livejournal.com profile] amchau and I are writing is getting rather long, but right at this moment, the answer is a Stargate fic of mine, Dying of the Light, posted on [livejournal.com profile] autumnalis.

12. Which of your fics is your favorite?

Mmm. Possibly Scent, which I've always liked, or that crossover epic Sleeping With Ghosts. There is a Stargate one written ages ago, Harsh Reality, which I like simply for the punchline.

13. Which of your fics is your least favorite?

Urgh. Well, I had well over forty Stargate fics written, of which a grand total of six made it onto [livejournal.com profile] autumnalis. Take what you will from that. Actually, I plan to look over last year's Christmas fic and post it, which will bring the total to seven. The rest all suck, to put it mildly.

14. What is your favorite fandom you've written in?

I don't know, really. I've liked them all for different reasons.

15. What fandom will you never touch with a ten foot pole?

RPS. Anything that involves real people sets off my squick-alarm.

16. How many pen names have you had?

One. All my fics are written under "Raven."

17. How many total stories have you written and published on the Web?

Well. Let's see. Counting the horrible Stargate ones but not counting drabbles or five-minute fics, probably about a hundred.

18. How many of those were lemons / contained sex?

None, really, but a lot implied it.

19. How many current WIPs do you have open?

Two. One with [livejournal.com profile] amchau, and one a Harry Potter one that I keep changing my mind about.

20. What fanfic kink do you read / write that disturbs you the most?

I don't really get the question. If it were fanfic kink that you read that disturbs other people, then it might be easier to answer. I don't know, really. I like deathfic, and a lot of people don't. The HP WIP referred to above is rather dark and disturbing and features a very co-dependent, physically/mentally abusive relationship. So maybe that.
