"Words can't bring me down..."
Feb. 19th, 2003 12:12 pmThe assembly...
Well, all the participants were afflicted with extreme depression just beforehand. Becca discarded the wig, Becky O tried to convince us her hat wasn't a trilby, it was something else, god knows what, and this was while I was trying to make five signs with the words "Words can't bring me down" on them.
Stress.
And then we began. Danni was quite convincing, and Hannah was very good as the Grolsch guy ("Shtop! This assembly is not ready!") And then the famous award sketch - which Ella was not in and I don't know why. Unless that was her "comeback." Some comeback.
It worked quite well, though Julie forgot the drumroll, and when it seemed as if Danni wasn't coming on, I went on and ad-libbed the lines myself.
Ella's sketch was meh - okay... and then it was Becca on. She stole the show completely and utterly. The audience were howling with laughter, and up in the soundbox I could see Julie and Mr Dunne swaying, slowly, hypnotically, while gesturing wildy and mouthing, "Same direction! Sway in the same direction!"
We didn't. We raised our banners at the right moment - Meg forgot so I gave her a big, obvious nudge - and Becca bowed to the sound of raptured, canned applause - Julie found the sound effect. I knew there was a reason people call her Julie-sound.
Ella jumped in on the prayer, I don't know why as it was Bev's effort completely - "Please God, give us a little bit o'confidence, but not too much, amen."
Mrs Williams said later that it looked remarkably slick. I think, for the first time ever, I agree. It was startlingly successful considering this morning was the first time we ran through it completely.
So, success. I think.
