Dear yuletide author:
Hello, and thank you for writing for me! As always let me say upfront that if you've got a story in your head that you want to write, please off you go and write that and never mind me. I want you to have a nice Yuletide time and I will love anything you write for me.
If-and-only-if it's helpful to you, here are some more things about what I like.
Generally: I like banter, people being good to each other, people being good at what they do.
Generally I don't like: PWPs (though that's not to say I don't like sex in stories, it's just, not just sex), violence against women, and men in positions of dominance over women.
Additionally: I don't insist on happy stories. I do like happy stories! Love them, even. But if the story of your heart is gloomy or wistful or just plain sad, I do still desperately want to hear it. Also, I am not a Christmas sort of person but that doesn't mean I don't like festive themes in stories.
My fandoms are as follows:
The Good Place (character: Eleanor Shellstrop)
The GOOD PLACE omg I love this show. It's my fave of the last couple of years, without a doubt. I love how wacky and funny it is, and how incredibly original, and most of all, how kind it is, and how hopeful. Eleanor is my favourite character for a whole number of reasons but mostly because she's so loyal, and strong, and so committed to living her life with moral courage. How good she is to Chidi makes my heart hurt and her friendship with Tahani is so joyful and I love how she interacts with Janet, and Michael, and basically all of them, yep.
I'd like anything about her, but if you want ideas: something about the show's ridiculous mythos! The doorman, the train to the Bad Place, Janet's Void! Something about the studying she does without Chidi, and how she becomes an independent thinker? Or, gosh, anything about bisexual Eleanor would be amaaaazing, I love how she suddenly realises in passing she's into Tahani! I mean, just a story about Eleanor coming out as bi, without actually being in a relationship, would be the joy of my heart.
Wayfarers - Becky Chambers (character: Kip)
So I love this series a lot for its kind and gentle universe, but it's the last book, Record of a Spaceborne Few, that really blew my mind. The idea of the Exodus Fleet is amazing to me -- these people, who live in this very precise, structured way, in defined social arrangements, with a powerful belief system, but all for reasons that no longer exist. They're not going anywhere any more -- but they still are who they are.
Kip, who wants so desperately to leave, and then chooses to comes back, seems to me to symbolise that -- how the Exodans change and stay the same. What I'd like, if you need an idea here, is what his life with Isabel is like after the book, and what it means to him to keep his people's records.
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (character: the Raven King)
This is one of my favourite books and having reread it this year for the first time in a while, I was struck by how much I love the wild, mythical texture of it. Behind Mr Norrell's staid lecturing and Jonathan Strange's dabblings with fairies and the tribulations of Wellington and the Cabinet and all the day-to-day of the book, there are these stories of the Raven King's unknowable magic, lurking in the footnotes.
So if you wanted to write me one of the stories of the Raven King, that would be amazing. I love the folk tales and fairy tales in the book about him. But equally I'd love something about what he means to his people, how they talk about him, in proverbs and traditions (I particularly like how, when it rains in summer or it's hot in winter, they say that John Uskglass is in love again, and has neglected his business) or one of the stories about how people claim to have seen him long after he left England. Or maybe something that happened in his reign?
(For the record, I don't need him to actually appear in your story if you'd rather not -- a story about him, rather than with him in, would also be great by me.)
In conclusion: I don't have any triggers or squicks, write what you like, and I will like it. Thank you again!
