Dear Yuletide author,
Hi! I'm
singlecrow on the AO3. Thank you for writing for me. First up, please feel free to ignore everything in this letter if you'd rather. I want you to have a good time writing the story you want to write, and if you have that already in mind I'm excited to read it. If it helps you, though, here are some things about what I like:
Generally, I like: loving friendships, snappy dialogue, people being competent at what they do.
Generally I don't like PWPs (which isn't to say I don't like sex in stories! I do, a lot, but with other things) and I don't like men in positions of power over women, particularly in a sexual context but generally.
I don't have any triggers or squicks. If you want to write a story with loads of sex in it or no sex at all in it, I like both of those. Also, I hesitate to say this, but: some people do feel obliged, given the festive element, to write a cheerful and happy Yuletide story. I like those! I like them a lot. But this is me saying: if the story of your heart is bleak and despairing, I'm here for it. I want to hear it.
Here are my fandoms, with a bit more about each:
The Good Place (characters: Eleanor Shellstrop, Chidi Anagonye)
I LOVE THIS SHOW, OMG. I love it so much. I'd like pretty much anything here - Eleanor and Chidi bicker about Kant; Eleanor and Chidi eat disappointing frozen yoghurt; Eleanor and Chidi come up with a super plan to defeat Michael! I love everything about their weird, loving, snippy friendship, and I would enjoy pretty much anything about it.
(Also, I am a nerd in respect of academic philosophy. I mention this just in case you are one too. Categorical imperatives 4evaaa)
Star Trek Discovery (character: Michael Burnham)
Michael is my favourite thing about this show and possibly one of my favourite Trek characters ever! Michael <3333 I adore her. Partly I love her for what she is - brittle, brave, unyielding - and partly because I'm super, super into Vulcans. I love everything about Vulcan culture, life and history. If you were into that also, I would love to see something of Michael's childhood on Vulcan, her foster parents, her schooling, her integration (or lack thereof) into Vulcan society. Or even how she relates to Vulcan and Vulcans as an adult; what she thinks of humanity, or doesn't think of it.
(Also, if it helps for this request: I know and love the wider Trek universe very well.)
Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells (characters: Murderbot, Dr Mensah)
MURDERBOT DOESN'T WANT TO MURDER IT WANTS TO WATCH TV. I am so fascinated by Murderbot, who has no feelings about anyone (it has lots of feelings about everyone). I'd like to know about the TV it watches, which shows it likes and why it likes them. And Murderbot's love for Dr Mensah makes my heart hurt. (And, in reverse - she trusts Murderbot, she cares for it. I'd love to see more of that.) Honestly, anything about these two characters would make me really happy.
(One last thing - please feel free to assume I'm all caught up with Disco and the Good Place by Christmas.)
Thank you again, friend! To reiterate: write what you want, and don't mind me.
