I do love that xkcd strip. It's something I liked about The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold, which I've just finished - not too many made-up words, and fantasy-that's-not-really-typical-fantasy (similar to how the Vorkosigan books aren't quite typical sci fi).
Have you read (I assume you have) Lincoln's Dreams by Connie Willis? I know you like Willis, and it's all about dreams (unsurprisingly), so if you haven't already read it it might be up your street.
