The MOTW episodes (which do get fewer and fewer as the show progresses, thankfully; I agree the mytharc ones are so much better) definitely all owe a huge debt to the X-Files, but I think on a thematic level, the shows are really polar opposites. Like, TXF was very much about M&S being affected by forces outside their control, and Fringe is emphatically not about that, which makes a big difference in how they approach their mytharcs and their standalone episodes. (Crossing my fingers that that's vague enough not to spoil you for anything!)
Oh oh oh, if you like the Observer, you are going to love the next episode in S2, "August." It immediately became my favorite of the ones I had seen when I first watched it, and it's still in my top ten, maybe even top five. In hindsight, it gets even better.
